stuck on build 14901: cannot update, cannot roll back

A few weeks ago MS Released build 14901. As I'm on the fast ring, got and installed the build. Then it released 14905. But installations would always fail. It would show me the installation process and then restart (as it usually would). However after logging in I would see that I'm still on build 14901. A minute later there would be a popup message saying that "some updates were not installed, select this message for more details". None were given when I did.

I thought I'd just wait for the next build, that it was a problem with 14905. But now that the next build, 14915 is out, I still keep running into the same problem.

Unfortunately, I cannot uninstall updates (update history is empty), nor can I roll back to the previous build through advanced startup ("there was a problem rolling back to your previous build, try resetting this PC first").

I currently cannot afford to reset this PC, is there another way?

Hello bluppfisk, and welcome to windowssh blog.

If you have another PC (friends?) that was updated to 14915, then you could use the method in the tutorial below to create an ISO file for 14915, then do an upgrade install with this ISO.

If you don't, then you could wait until the 14915 ISO is available to download from Microsoft using OPTION THREE below, then do an upgrade install with the ISO.

Windows 10 ISO Download

You think that will work while everything else seems to be broken? I'm afraid of borking the machine completely.

At least 14901 is somewhat usable now since I installed the LockdownUtil.dll file :<

It should help since upgrading to 14915 will also repair Windows system files. As long as you select to "Keep everything" during the upgrade, you shouldn't lose anything. I would always recommend to back up anything that you don't want to lose to be safe though.

Thanks! Will try when the ISO becomes available.

Please let us know how it went.

Doesn't sound like 14915 will ever become available as a download, at least not from a reliable source, correct? So I'll have to wait for the next slow ring update. Bummer.

Yeah, it's still only build 14393 available for an ISO right now. Keep checking every few days to see if MS may update for a newer build.

Still no iso. I found this in C:Windowssetupact.log. Does this help?
