Why does Windows 10 cause slower download speed than Windows 7?

Downloading the same file on the same computer in the same location.
Win 7/10 dual boot.

Windows 10 downloads the same file 5-10x slower than Windows 7, with the same Intel wifi drivers.
It's singlethread download is throttled for some reason I can't figure out why.

Is it registry settings? This is a clean windows 10 install. No bloatware.
What is it about Windows 10 that makes downloads so slow...

Compare the awful speed of windows 10...

I can max out my internet connection in Windows 10 with simultaneous threads in other speed tests. But singlethread downloads suck in Win10. Are there any tweaks?

It depends if you had updated your driver for your network device after installing Windows 10. All that the Speed Test is going to show, is your max Upload and Download speed, which can be verified in your U-Verse Gateway under the Broadband tab.

Windows 10 has better management for RAM and how it handles network packets. If it is only on your LAN that you are seeing these issues, then there is something else going on.

I certainly don't have slower download speeds in Windows 10 or Edge. My guess is that you have something configured differently. Maybe you have Jumbo packets on or some other optimizations in 7.

I never tweaked anything in Windows 7. This is a totally fresh Windows 7 sp1 installation. Freshly installed 2 days ago. No programs loaded except Chrome. Just drivers.

For this particular Intel wifi card, the driver is exactly the same. I verified that the driver installation file is identical for both 7 and 10.

I also triple booted Linux Mint, and get the same fast speed for this particular speedtest file.

So there's gotta be something in Win 10 holding me back. I turned off everything that could possibly interfere, e.g. p2p updates, bluetooth, location, etc. But Win10 just throttles the singlethread speed.

It might be Intel drivers for Windows 10 causing it, not windows 10 itself. I did a speed test with 1 wall in between the router and my Surface Pro 3 and it still completely transferred all of my 300 Mbps internet without a hiccup! Link speed is 585 Mbps during this test.

In short, don't blame Windows 10, blame Intel's drivers for Windows 10.

I also added the single thread download speed test. I average about 25 MB/s during this test which IMO shows that Windows 10 doesn't slow any single threading download.

yeah, i just reformatted and clean installed windows 10. That fixed the problem.
Now I get full speed single threaded with the exact same Intel drivers.

I will never know what caused this issue.

The upgrade from an older OS or messed up Windows 10 install can cause it from residual garbage in the Registry.

maybe. But this laptop came with windows 10

Like I stated, anything that was done to cause this, could have been from when the OS updated after you created your profile, or even the device driver being updated through updates, could have caused it.

Make sure that you disable Device Driver updates in the Control Panel Systems section. If you have not setup a one of the menu programs like Classic Shell or Start10, I would do it if you want more control of the Start Menu like 7 offered.

It is always better with a new system that came pre-installed with Windows 10, to use a clean OS version, since it gets rid of anything that the OEM had pre-installed.
