Login screen changed and password changed after verification

My Login screen used to have only my name on it and yesterday after clicking on "Verify" and going thru several screens and rebooting, I noticed that my name and Hotmail address are both on my Login screen and the Windows 10 password has been changed to my Hotmail password.
What happened?

You have changed your log-in from a local account to a Microsoft account. That is what you were doing when you verified and clicked through several screens.

OK understood.
How do I undo it?

You can undo it by reading the windowssh blog tutorial and following the instructions

How to Switch to a Local Account from a Microsoft Account in Windows 10

Thank you but it won't let me use my previous name. I had to edit my name to make it different from the one I originally used. And what's weird is that on the C: drive under Users the Folder is still named after my old name, not the new one. I also wonder if this new name is a Local Administrator account like it was before.

If you go to your account screen via settings, it'll display under the account name whether it's an administrator account.

Microsoft want's us all, like the Apple users, to be on-line and to share everything with everybody and specially with Microsoft.
Logging in using a Microsoft account gives you the advantage that if you store your data on One-drive, that data is "always" available to the user.
Of course you should keep in mind that this data is not just accessibel by YOU, but also by the NSA / CIA etc etc.

My advise:
login using a local account.... delete the Microsoft account on your PC.
Keep your data as safe as possible

Make sure to create a System Repair Disk and do weekly backups to a NAS or similar

Good luck

The Settings say it is an Administrator Account.

Why can't I use the same Local Account Name as before?

Just tried to replicate on my test rig, but not successful as I'm not coming up with your user account issue. Mine is working perfectly.

Is the account disabled? Have a check in "Computer Management" to confirm.
  • Go to Local Users and Groups > Users
  • If your missing account is listed as a user then right click on it and select properties
  • On the "General" tab, make sure that the account is neither disabled or locked and untick those boxes if they are set wrong.
  • On the "Member of" tab, make sure that the account is listed as a member of the Administrator group.
  • If you have made any changes during this process, then make sure you click "Apply" before closing the dialog
