Start Bar not working after update install in Windows 10

Hi, I upgrade a laptop to Windows 10 and all was fine for a month or so. At the end of June a Windows Update occurred. Since than I can not use the start bar. Icons on desktop work. Nothing on the start bar will work.

I have tried restore but it says restore fails.

Any suggestions welcome.

Not sure of what you mean by Start Bar

Here's how you can grab a screen shot that shows the issue and attach it to a new post.

It is the Task Bar. You are probably going to have to do a repair or wait for the Anniversary to get pushed out tomorrow and over the week to see if that fixes the problem.

If you are using Classic Shell or any other type of utility that changes the Task Bar behavior, that can also be the culprit.

Hi, Yes, it is the taskbar and start button that is not working. I am not running any shells or other external apps. I applied the Anniversary update but no joy. It seemed to install, at least it went through the process. But when I check the Update it says we are still an old version not the most resent and the button and taskbar still do not work. I welcome any suggestions?

Thanks, try this for the Start menu ... then you can address the taskbar if it is still an issue

Hi, tried as you suggest. It starts and says Checking application registration... and the green progress bar just goes on and on (let it run for over two hours) and never gets to the next step. Any other suggestions?

Not for anniversary, since they have changed so much with that upgrade. They removed and changed so much, the only ones who may know are in the insider forum on here.

Please post the output from the two programs below
Tip: Press Alt+PrtScn to capture only the activeWindow, paste the capture into Paint and Ctrl+S to save the image, then attach each saved image.

Launch Command prompt (Admin), then type the two commands - the output will be in separate windows

Winver

slmgr /dlv

I'd also like to see your Disk Management

  1. Download dmDskmgr-vg.zip (contains dmDskmgr-vg.mmc)

  2. Open the compressed folder, dmDskmgr-vg.zip
Double click dmDskmgr-vg.mmc to launch it
Press the Open button if prompted Do you want to open this file?
Answer yes to the User Account Control prompt

Tip: you can drag the middle bar up to show more of the bottom pane

(just don't drag it too far up - I also need the information in the top pane)

  3. Press Alt+PrtScnto grab a snapshot of just the Disk Management window
Open Paint and Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the image

  4. Attach the image to a new post

Thanks

The core issue on your machines seems to be 1607 failing to install. There are a number of possibilities.

Do you have Avast anti-virus installed? Avast has acknowledged an issue and is (or has already??) building a patch.

You could simply try a Repair install - not sure if it will succeed since you could not update to 1607.
