SourceMicrosoft announced during a January event at its headquarters in Redmond that Windows 10 would be offered free of charge to those on Windows 7 and 8.1, which makes it the very first new Windows version to be provided at no cost.
There’s a catch, however: the upgrade from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1must be performed in the first year after launch. If you don’t upgrade during this window, you’ll have to pay for it, and this approach is what creates so much confusion around the world these days.
It’s no secret that many people believe that Windows 10 would be free only for one year, but it turns out that a number of stores (not Microsoft’s though) and some service repair centers are saying basically the same thing, telling users that the new OS would launch as a one-year trial, meaning that you’ll have to pay to continue using it after that.
It's not hard to understand why there is confusion regarding this issue. Microsoft has never given an OS away for free before and people naturally figure there must be a "catch" to it.

This is really no different from the situation with Windows 8. When Windows 8 was first released, Microsoft offered a low-cost upgrade for a period of time. Those upgrades you purchased at that low cost are still valid even today, and you don't have to pay full price if you want to reinstall Windows 8 today.
It's exactly the same thing with Windows 10, except that instead of it being low cost, it's free.
The one difference I see is that with Windows 8, you were upgraded to the professional version. But with the "free" Windows 10 upgrade, you are upgraded to the same version you are currently running. I think it would be nice if Microsoft offered the same special price break to those like me who would pay $40 to upgrade W7 Home Premium to Windows 10 Professional.This is really no different from the situation with Windows 8. What if after the 1 year freebie of Windows 10, MS comes up with new OS (let us call it windows 11 or some fancy name), yes, upfront it is windows 10 is free, then the new OS will have to be purchased. They got to make selling software their main business.
