Hi,
Two days ago I woke up to this problem, my icon pictures are gone and I can't access properties
when I right click anything. So, night before everything was fine, PC went to sleep mode, next morning i get up wake PC from sleep mode and the problem i mentioned was there. Some of the icons i used are custom and some default, so the problem is not in one of those 2 things, and since i cant access properties i figure it is some deeper issue than just icon's picture missing.
Here is the screenshot, i'll leave it like this here, too, because I am new here and not sure how attachment thing works
Hope you guys/girls can resolve this issue for me
Thanks in advance
Hello Djanduy, and welcome to windowssh blog.
You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to sort it for you.
System Restore Windows 10
Hello Brink,
First of all, thanks for the fast response.
Now, back to the problem, i thought about the restore but also wanted to see if there was another solution.
I tried to do system restore now, but stumbled on another problem which could be seen on this new screenshot
I googled this error right now, and went through the steps from Microsoft support forum, first step was to backup COMPONENTS in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, but COMPONENTS is not in registry at all, i guess this is part of the problem, too.
Also I forgot to mention 2 things, first, which probably I should have mentioned in the first post, when i saw icon pictures are missing I restarted PC, and when I did it Win10 installed updates, I hoped that after that all will be well, but I was wrong, sigh.
Second, if you look at the screenshot from the first post, u could see names of the folders and programs, the thing is, now the box of the icons is reduces to just text, to names of the folders and programs, like the picture was not meant to be a part of the icon, e.g. when all is normal and you click on icon's picture and text, it all gets selected/highlighted, but when I do it now I can click only on text, that text gets selected/highlighted, where the picture of the icon was now its just empty space/background, hope I explained this good.
If you haven't already, you might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot instead.
I tried last night for around 2 hours to do restore at boot, but i couldn't get there, PC didn't respond to F8, I don't have USB with OS, it's Win10 I didn't need it to install Windows, i don't know any other option to get to boot menu.
After failing at getting to system restore at boot, while going through the Settings/Update&Security/Recovery, I ran into "Reset this PC", I saw that it is basically reinstalling Windows, but a little lets say softer (It kept my account, and almost all settings that are part of it, only programs/apps on C: partition are gone),so after all the things I tried and getting a bit mad, I decided to do it, it always solves that kind of problem and many other, and so it did this time, problem is fixed.
Before this thread is closed, I wanted to ask one thing, what is the cause if this problem?
I think it has something to do with the updates, because i absolutely made no changes that could cause it (everything was fine, played a movie, i went to sleep, PC went to sleep, i woke up, woke up the PC and the problem appeared).
Anyway, I tried to describe the problem and the circumstances the best I could, before and after getting it, I really hope it helps someone getting some better solution.
Thanks for the help and the fast response, it made me to immediately fave the forum
Cheers!!!
I'm glad you got it sorted, but it could have been anything that caused it to get corrupted.
