Problem with cloning using macrium

I downloaded the Macrium version 6.1.1081 and created the rescue disk.
I started the process of cloning to my external drive, but it stated it would overwrite the drive.
I have back-ups from my old PC's on that external drive that I want to keep.
Can I first clone the PC to a folder in "my documents" and then copy it to the external drive?
Or do I need a clean USB?
Another question, which is preferable, an image or a clone of my PC?

If you are trying to back up your data in a way that you can restore it later than you want to make an image, not a clone. The image will be a single file, but it has to be created on a partition other than the one you are making the image of. Once you create the image file, you can right click on it and mount it as a virtual drive to explore it.

Cloning the drive is when you want to transfer the existing contents of a hard drive to a new hard drive to replace the old one. After cloning you would disconnect the old hard drive, and boot the computer from the new drive you cloned to.

Thank you for the quick reply.
I am very technically challenged, thus my new question:
I just need the data thus the imaging would be the way to go.
How do I do that, does it have to be a empty drive? or can it be added to the other backed-up files?
Will it also preserve the software like Corel's Paint Shop Pro?

The image is just a regular (although large) file like any other file. It can go to any other drive or folder on another drive and will not erase anything. The only requirement is that if you are imaging C: drive, for example, you can't save the image file on C: drive.

The file will be about 80% in size of the used space of the drive you are making the image of. So if you C: drive shows 100GB used - then the location you want to save the image file to should have at least 80GB free space on it to hold the file.

Sorry, it is very confusing for me since I also suffer from dyslexia (result of an accident).
What is the easiest to do for me, I have plenty of space left on the external drive.
Should I just copy and paste the "my document" folder and then copy and paste my other software programs? I lost the original CD during a household move.

Copy/paste is not a good idea. Cloning does nor work that well at times. I recommend you work with images.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong, I tried to make an image of my system, but it does not let me choose the external hard Drive.
It has 644 gigabyte free space.
It did not give the option to choose the external Hard Drive.

Click the "..." to the right of "Folder", browse to your external drive.

Browse to your destination where I pointed the arrow.

Thank you all for the quick and useful replies. I have it now in the process of imaging.
This post is from our other PC as I did not want to take a chance to goof it up.
