Ad aware program suddenly appeared -- anybody know what it is

Hi there

Not sure where this program came from --anybody got an idea what it is - easy enough to get rid of but am curious to know what it is.

I suspect it probably is bundled with bloatware when downloading something - many sites make stuff so confusing to download that I'm sure unwanted programs must be installed by the 100,000's.

Hi:

Ad-aware | Download Free Antivirus for PC by Lavasoft

IIRC they were originally based in Germany, but now seem to be based in Canada (the WebCompanion website lists Malta as a physical address).
IIRC they are not currently considered one of the more robust AV products on the market (although I'm sure the software has both detractors and fans).
I have not personally used their product in >10 years, since the XP days.

If you did not intentionally install it, then my guess would be that some sort of "Trial" version came along as a "freebie" when you installed another, legitimate program if you missed un-ticking an "option" during that program's setup wizard. That would make it very nearly a "PUP" in my book.

EDIT: Knowing nothing about it, I would be inclined to uninstall it, especially if you did not intentionally install it.

Cheers,
MM

Like Moxie, I used to use this back in the XP days but its a different program these days. If you didnt install it, I would uninstall it as I think it installs a service. Whats the install path?

Hi there

Not sure what the pgm is or how it was installed but : --I simply did a Restore of my OS -- only takes around 7 mins on an SSD -- I can't be bothered with testing whether or not standard uninstall leaves traces or whatever --IMO if you have decent backup just restore --saves so many problems later on.

Serves me right -- but it just goes to show even relatively experienced people can download / install stuff by accident -- ALWAYS CHECK CAREFULLY --often the real download link isn't in the main window -- and FREE DOWNLOAD doesn't always mean the Software is free (rather like FREE Cash machines !!!! use is free but you don't get Free money !!!).

I've never used it (and I don't know if it's compatible with Win10), but "Unchecky" is a 3rd-party application to help prevent inadvertent installation of "bundleware".
It's probably NOT a full substitute for user situational awareness and "safe hex".
