Read more...When Microsoft announced Windows 10, the first question many people asked was what happened to Windows 9? While we have heard the reasoning about the programming issue for legacy applications, Microsoft is pushing a line that sounds a bit more interesting than the 'it breaks old apps'.
Microsoft's Tony Prophet, who is the corporate vice president of Windows Marketing told a different story while on stage at the Dreamforce Conference in San Francisco. So what did Prophet say about Windows 9? Simply, "It came and it went".

The funny thing is that the massive upgrade from 8, so large that it had to skip 9 and go to 10 looks just like Windows 7. LOL
But that's why I like it, I always said that what they needed was to improve 7, not change to something completely different and I think they finally figured that out.

The way I see it Windows 8.1 Update should have been named Windows 9.
In my opinion their was some things Microsoft wanted to do.
1. Try very hard to improve on W-7.
2. To get as far away from W-8 as they could.
3. Make improvements to do both.
4. Nine doesn't go over well in Germanic languages. (Nine = No)
5. Show to the public that Microsoft has started listing to the public and will try to make W-10 suite the needs and desires of the masses on several different hardwares. Portable and non-protable. Touch screen and non-touch screen. Users choice.
6. W-10 name is use to guide our thinking to not just another operating system but a whole new design that will be adjustable to suite the needs of the owner and hardware not just the SOS with a different number.
To me this new attitude Microsoft has came from new management.
Listing to their customers will serve them well.

MS still has over a year to make changes. I was a Win8 preview user from day one. What I started with and what ended up being the retail project had some substantial changes. So was I. What major changes in 8? The basic template layout was made. Boot to the new Start Screen instead of the desktop without the Start Menu, the Modern UI with Charms, Store, and apps. They may have added or changed little features here and there, but the basic layout was the same. If you are speaking of the major changes that 8.1 brought then that's a different thing. Still didn't bring back the Start Menu, though.MS still has over a year to make changes. I was a Win8 preview user from day one. Bottom line is that MS released the 10 Preview "template" out there and it contains Modern. I'm pretty sure they won't and can't afford to give it up due to there attempt to infiltrate the mobile market. They compromised by bringing the Start Menu back which is what I meant about the new screen door. The ability to boot to desktop remains, but also the option to boot to Start Screen remains, although greyed out for now.
So far looking at the top ten wishes of the feedback app there are really not any requests for a major change. But, yes, we have a while to go yet.
