For a while now, I haven't been able to re-arrange files in new folders that I create. I still have the option to select "auto-arrange" and "align to grid" in older folders but not in new ones. I'm running Windows 10. Any idea how to fix this?
Where are you right clicking?
Empty spaces.
If you're talking about being able to re-arrange file lines in details view or move thumbnails in between two others, you need to disable auto arrange. I NEEDED this feature in 8 and 10 in order to re-arrange picture thumbs in the order I wanted and then rename in correct order.
Download the bat file in this Brink tutorial and the undo one too, if you change your mind or want to switch back and forth. You will notice auto arrange and align to grid will be grayed out when you R-click 'View' -

This fixed whatever was screwed up before. Thanks!
Most welcome. This drove me crazy going from XP to 8.1. I often put new pictures into a folder and needed to re-arrange the order and re-name/number for slide shows. Brink's bat file fixed it and I've never needed to go back to the 10 default.
I'm glad it's working now, but it seems like whenever I add a file to a folder, it re-arranges everything by alphabetical order, and I have to re-organize everything all over again. That's pretty much the only downside for now. Never used to be like that before, so i'm hoping it's just temporary.
"whenever I add a file to a folder, it re-arranges everything by alphabetical order, and I have to re-organize everything all over again."
The re-arrangement only takes in the open folder view. If you close it and re-open, it defaults to the sorting order you selected in Details, say by 'Name' or 'Date'. You can see from my screenshot two files I moved from their orig position but if I close the folder and re-open or open the same alongside it, they are sorted again by 'Name'.
I don't know the purpose behind your re-arranging the order. In my case, let's say I have pictures from a golf course with 18 holes, numbered from 01-18 and I add new ones t, say, Hole 12 and want to see them in a certain order, I will rearrange and then rename them. The change in order is then permanent in that View. Hope that helps.
Yep, I figured out last night that if I add or edit a file in a folder, it re-arranges in alphabetical order, but if I refresh the folder before doing anything, it keeps my arrangement. It's kind of odd, but at least it works.
