I just downloaded the 32/64 bit ISO using the "Both" option of MCT; now I discover that it won't fit on a DVD (ISO file is 5.47GB).
One of my older PCs won't boot from the USB drive, so I need a DVD. Do I have to download the 32-bit version? I've started just in case, but not a very fast internet connection out here in the boonies.
I don't know of a way to separate the versions from the image. I would rather download the 32-bit version from Microsoft Tech Bench. This ISO can install or upgrade both Home and Pro version depending on previous Windows version or key (for clean-install). Careful to download the right language, or you won't be able to upgrade. "English" is English US and "English International" is English GB (British). Each language can only upgrade the same language. Unless you have a specific restricted Windows version, you need to download the first option "Windows 10" which is the full unrestricted version containing both Home and Pro.
It's 50% downloaded now, so I may as well wait. However, I have a bigger problem, the DVD drive is broken
Is there a way to do a clean install from a USB stick if the PC won't boot from it?
If you have a working computer at the same network, same workgroup and network set as "private" (not public), then you can share your DVD-ROM drive. Open network from the other computer and then access the DVD-ROM drive. Don't start setup from there, it could be unable to continue at some point! Instead copy all the files to a folder in the hard disk (such as C:W10SETUP) and then run setup from this folder to upgrade your existing Windows version to 10.
For a clean-install on the same computer you would have to swap the DVD-ROM drive with a working one or use a USB DVD-ROM drive, if available. There is another option, use a utility to extract Windows setup files to the hard disk (connect the disk to a another computer to use its DVD drive) and then boot from the hard disk to resume setup, but this is too advanced and I wouldn't want to confuse you.
If you can boot into recovery then (assuming your disk is already partitioned) you could go to command line and from powershell enterExpand-WindowsImageCode:Expand-WindowsImage -ImagePath "e:sourcesinstall.wim" -ApplyPath "c:" -Index 1
I did this recently from a dual boot of windows and no other steps were required (I use a third party bootloader).
If it doesn't boot you might have to run bcdboot c:Windowsafterwards though.

Can't be! You have a Core-i5. Maybe you have to enable NX/PAE/DEP (whatever is called) in BIOS. If unsure, just enable all CPU features in Advanced section to be on the safe side. Just in case CPU is not detected properly, you may also try updating your chipset drivers. In worst case you may have to update your BIOS to the last version.
I've got several problems with this very old Dell Inspiron I8200 PC (NOT the PC in my specs):
- It has no working DVD Drive
- It doesn't support boot from USB
- Trying to install 10586 from a USB in Windows 7 said "This PC's processor doesn't support a critical feature (NX).
Should I give up?

You could download the ISO to the PC and update it after you either mount it or unzip it. If that still results in the same processor error then I would just use the existing OS.
