need to set Internet to metered connection in W home with ethernet

need to set Internet to metered connection in Windows home with ethernet connection.

only seems to be an option for WIFI....I don't connect using WIFI but have a metered connection, so can't afford windows to auto download....

is is there a way of doing this ? possibly a registry hack..

thanks

you can'tset Ethernet as a metered connection, the same was true for Windows 8. you will have to use your router or something to do it. or download one of the MANY 3rd party apps available which can monitor your Ethernet connection and cripple it if you download too much.
good luck with that if you have another PC on your network where you listen to music from or watch movies from because it will see any and all traffic and you will hit your monthly limit real fast.

doubtful anyone can answer why MS did this, call Microsoft to find out.

p.s. whats your limit?

strange indeed any network usage limit applies if it's through wired or wireless....maybe MS think we only use wireless.....I am sure there is a registry hack which turns updates off, then I can download them at night when there is no restriction...
thanks
just found this....will try later.....even has downloadable registry fix options...
. How to Prevent Windows 10 From Automatically Downloading Updates

yeah I am really not pleased with Microsoft forcing updates down our throats with no way to stop it or anything.
PLUS it downloads drivers automatically too which is BAD. if history tells us anything drivers from windows update are a last resort type of install. yet now MS has forced us to download them.
If its actually downloading legit driver packages from the vendors that's fine, but still driver updates, like graphics, can kill a games performance so a forced update of a video driver could just kill your gaming.

Also - when you set Wifi to be a metered connection windows updates will not download. so that fixes your worries about updates being downloaded.
just yank the Ethernet cord when ever possible.
if you are on a desktop I would offer that you buy a nice USB wifi dongle and set it to metered

oh yeah and the best way, would be to just turn off the windows update service in 'services'
turn it off and then set startup type to disabled.

i really thought windows updates did not include drivers, will check on that....it's worse than I thought, will use the registry hack...thanks....MS

I have not tried this because I'm using a wifi connection and have no problem turning updates off. but you

Ethernet Connection - Set as Metered or Unmetered in Windows 10

I can confirm this worked for me, and I am using wired ethernet. I had to reboot and then have WU check for updates once, and then it immediately said my connection was metered and wouldn't download the available updates.

Tested on 11099 Insider, 10 Home.
