Strange Sound problem

I have just done a fresh install of Win 10 (not an upgrade)
I have noticed that no windows sounds are working.
I can play music , listen to youtube everything seems fine but I do miss the little sounds that re-assured me my usb stick was just plugged or unplugged etc.
I have searched for an answer but my problem seemingly has not come up as far as I can see.

A strange thing is that if I am playing music and then plug my usb in I can hear it!
stop playing music and I can't
Now someone cleverer than me will probably deduce something from that But I cant.
Please help

Thanks

Mike

More info please. Soundcard, connection to the amplifier/ to the speakers? What sound devices are installed? What's the default device? Without such info it's not possible to even make an educated guess, let alone come up with a serious solution.

Yes your right, sorry

AMD High Definition Audio Device
Realtek High Definition Audio
AMD DP output is set as the default device
It is outputting to my monitor on a Displayport vers 1.1 through my AMD Radeon HD 6850 graphics card
if I plug headphones in the realtech app pops up but I dont get any sound through them.

thanks

Mike

Ok, my suspicion is the following: The audio player is set to play through the Realtek device and Windows uses the default device which is AMD HD Audio. Is my assumption correct that your speakers are connected to your pc's audio output? In this case setting Realtek as your default device should fix the problem.

No sorry I didn't make it clear again .
The sound is going through displayport to my monitor which has speakers inbuilt.
I just enabled the realtech digital and set it as default
I dont get any audio at all like this. including testing the windows sounds.
I also tried plugging in my headphones again but no sound out of them either.

Thanks

Mike

Ok, then we have to look further. Can you please do the following:

  • Check if the Windows sounds are enabled?
  • What happens if you change your default sound device to Realtek and plug in your headphones? Are there any Windows sounds?
  • Another measure to take would be to completely uninstall the AMD driver as well as the Realtek driver. Then download the latest ones and reinstall them. It could fix your problems.

Please report back if any of these measures helped or not.

Hi
Windows sounds are enabled
I downloaded the latest realtek audio driver from microsoft catalogue but for some reason It won't let me install them
when I do to device manager and update driver, even when i point to the new drivers on my drive it says that my drivers are up to date and won't install the new ones.
I deleted realtek device and click scan for hardware changes but it doesn't find realtek.
I can't see how to install the new drivers from here?

thanks

Mike

Don't download drivers through Windows update. Get them directly from AMD and Realtek. In case of Realtek use a system info tool like speccy, Aida64... to determine what Realtek sound chip is on your mainboard. But be sure both devices are completely uninstalled before you start with reinstalling them.

I went to realtek download and I could only find one file which seemed to be for any win 10 system
as I ran setup it installed the network drivers and the audio drivers but it still didn't work.
I checked the date on the audio driver and it was 07/08/2012 which is the same as before! (I did uninstall them first so I know they were re-installed)
this would explain why my driver wouldn't update before when it said I had the latest drivers ! which are 3years old!

Thanks
Mike

What about the AMD driver? Since you output your sound through Displayport I'd focus on that driver.

And have you tried this?

What happens if you change your default sound device to Realtek and plug in your headphones? Are there any Windows sounds?
