Windows 10 won't let me open the start button, or anything else.

I have limited use of someone else's computer to request this help, because my laptop is completely useless since upgrading to Windows 10. The start button does nothing when I click on it. I can't even shut down!& Chrome takes about 5 minutes to come up, but then, no internet pages will open.

I'm an old woman with virtually no tech savy & need help. How can I get rid of Windows 10 & go back to Windows 7, when I can't open anything on my computer? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Looks like you're only interested in helping people who want windows 10.
I guess I made another mistake by asking for help here.
My first mistake was downloading windows 10.

Louise, I've seen that issue on one of my own machines, but was able to use the RIGHT button on the start menu to get to the shutdown item. It went away upon restarting. Can you fire up task manager on the machine (CTRL-SHIFT-ESC) and see if some task is completely taking over the processor?

Sorry, it is CTRL-ALT-DEL for task manager.

It has been very busy here, we will help you with all you need.

I'm sorry, but this is so frustrating & the post had slipped to the bottom with no response. ctrl-alt-delete does nothing, though it never has. I tried the right click on the start button & after about 1 1/2 minutes a simple menu showed up allowing a shut down. I'll try that immediately.

Honestly, if windows 10 can be "fixed" so it works & I can open my existing files (all error messages when I tried to access them through "my computer" icon), & can let me access the internet in a timely fashion. I tried to open chrome (14 minutes) to do a google search for support before coming to this computer. It took almost 2 hours for the page to open.

OK, try restarting the computer, then come back and give an update.

Welp. I tried shutting down by following ArtShapiro's suggestion. Screen went black, but power button is still illuminated.

Everyone: I wonder if Louise is seeing something that happened on my upgrade a couple days ago (anyone else see it?):

Upon the successful upgrade to 10, the machine restarted, came up, and after about 30 seconds went into a hard loop - keyboard and mouse unresponsive, machine completely hung. Three forced power-down restarts resulted in consistent behavior.

But that was enough time to fire up task manager, and a "OneDrive Setup" process was swamping the machine. I terminated it.

The problem went away and I've restarted a few times without incident. Not needing OneDrive, I went into gpedit and disabled it.

Louise is reporting preposterously slow responsiveness, and mine was worse than that. Still, it seems worthy of mention / discussion.

Computer is still "running" something, even though the screen is black. To restart it I'll have to hold the power button down to turn it off, but that's not a proper shut down.
