I deleted windows temp folder, can't install new versions of software.

hey there!

I was doing a manual delete stuff from the C drive in order to free up some space and i deleted all files in some windows temp folder, can't remember where on C: and since then i can't update software or uninstall.

it asks me for some file on a cd-rom or removable drive and can't continue.

So, what do I do now?

Ideally you will have taken the widely recommended precautions against system failure/corruption/random user error- namely
a. Enable System Restore
b. Use disk imaging.

(a) might enable you to recover from this if you use a suitable restore point
(b) by restoring your most recent system or disk image you would 99.9% be able to recover from this. Maybe 99.999%.

You are highly recommended to use a tool such as the well-known Ccleaner to clean your system. That means you avoid such risks.

If none of the above is relevant to you, then you might be able to recover files from your recycle bin, unless you permanently deleted them.

Beyond that, as you say you can neither uninstall programs nor update software, you could try an in-place upgrade repair install (See tutorial section).

Your details are rather vague, so I offer general ideas that might help.

So I can't get into wondows after reboot, i can't get into recovery mode. It says recovery mode in text in all the corners for fale safe but the screen just keeps occasionaly flickering and it stops there, no desktop loaded. i booted up advanced recovery and tried all the alternatives there, reset pc, recovery etc. nothing works. i think i'll just reinstall after i copy over all the files to my second pc.

thank you for your reply

Probably the best idea. Once you've got basic Windows and drivers configured, make sure the first program you use (and create its boot medium too so you can recover a non-bootable PC) is a disk imaging program e.g. Macrium Reflect (free). You'll need an external disk or other medium say at least 3 times as big as what you're backing up.

oki! how about using hirens boot cd?
i found these 2 today "Windows 10 Manage Updates and Recovery" 167mb and ZAR 26mb, know those?

Imaging software: you need e.g.
Macrium Reflect (free)

Others free: e.g.
Aomei Backupper
Veeam Endpoint

Commercial:
PAragon, O&O DiskImage.... etc Avoid Acronis - was good years ago now bloated.

The boot medium you then need is that for the imaging program you've chosen.

Hiren's Boot CD isn't UEFI compatible last I knew, and is a collection of utilities on mini XP, like Bart's. Both rather dated (I think). Nothing to do with partition/disk imaging.
Don't know what the other 2 are, sorry.

oooh, ive been using acronis for years... i'll check the others out. thx

btw, while i got your attention, would you happen to know how to increase the virtual machine resolution running Remix-OS_3.0.101_20160726_VB-64bit in virtualbox?

Hi, sorry, no- suggest posting under 'Virtualisation'.

I deleted windows temp folder, can't install new versions of software.
