Will PC support 64 bit

One of the secondary family PC's is a Dell E521
This has an Athlon 64X2 Dual

This sort of reads like it should be OK with 64bit W10 ? ......... anybody know if this is the case.

The processor is definitely compatible with 64-bit OSes. The real question is, how much memory do you have in the computer?

1GB

The CPU is compatible with X64 for Vista, 7, and 8.

There is a chance that is not compatible with X64 for 8.1 or 10. See this old thread:

AMD ATHLON II install

There's a link in the thread about coreinfo, a command line utility that determines whether the required features are present.

Even if it's compatible, I'm not sure that I'd try X64 on an old PC with 1GB of RAM. According to Dell, the E521 maxes out at 4GB (4X1GB). As it's old DDR2, it will be relatively expensive (£50 at newegg for the UK, for example).

I agree!

Thanks

I agree!
That's based on an old discrete graphics card. That could be changed without extreme expense.

On the other hand, any expense at all on a PC this old may be unjustifiable.

I recently used NTLite to slipstream AMD drivers into the Windows 10 disc for my mother-in-laws old Inspiron 5030. It isn't going to run well, especially with only 1 GB of memory, but if the OP makes a system image first, there's no harm in trying it out.

I'm tempted to just upgrade to W7 ...... PC should be OK with that.
