Microsoft gives answers not even related and acer won't respond...

Greetings,

I have an Acer Aspire E 17 - ES1-711-P1UV

When I updated my OS from Windows 8 to Windows 10 I noticed that the touchpad stopped working. I connected a USB mouse to the Laptop and that allowed me to have mouse functionality.

I went to Acer's website and entered my serial number and downloaded the drivers that were under Windows 10 - 64-bit.

specifically downloaded

TouchPad ELANTECH Touchpad Driver 13.6.3.1 7.3 MB 2015/07/27

After I downloaded this I double clicked on setup and installed the software. I did not see any errors. I restarted the computer and my touchpad did not work.

I went into the system settings and viewed the Device Manager and noticed there is an Unknown Device. I installed the Unknown Device and scanned to detect new hardware/software and the Unknown Device reappeared.

My TouchPad still did not work.

I contacted Acer and their live support had me do several things and nothing happened. They escalated me to their "Supervisors" and they responded "Contact Microsoft as it sounds like it's an issue with them." and they disconnected. They have GREAT customer service *sarcasm*.

Now I'm stuck without the ability to use the touchpad on my keyboard and also the FN + F7 does not do anything either.

I don't know about Acer but my Samsung netbook also sports an ELANTECH touchpad and Windows update found a driver for ELANTECH, and installed OK and seems to be fine, did you tried that?
Anyway, this touchpad was detected like a regular PS2 mouse and worked out of the box, except advanced feats like swiping, scrolling etc that worked after said update, strange yours not, maybe chipset drivers?

I have ran windows update a good 10 to 15 times, at most it updates defender and that's it. I've went to Acer and tried that.. it seems that the file I download form there doesn't really install anything when I click it. I checked Device Manager and nothing is listed under mouse/keyboard except the USB mouse I'm using.

It's like the computer doesn't recognize the mouse at all.

It's weird because AFAIK touchpads are standard PS2 devices that don't require drivers to work at a basic level, i.e, are plug and play, drivers are only for enabling scrolling, gestures, etc, and should be listed as "standard ps2 mouse" when no driver installed maybe it's missing another driver, like chipset?
Are you sure that unknown device is the touchpad? maybe is another thing?

I though the same thing. After the install I had 4 unknown devices but as I download files form acers website and install them .. some of the unknown devices have disappeared. so doing that again and maybe it will take care of the last one, but I know the touchpad 100% doesn't work as I type this.

I have installed everything on the page for Acer and nothing took away that one unknown device.

I have an Aspire ES1-711-P14W and my Elantech touchpad is not showing in device manager so I contacted Microsoft first and they told me my computer was broken and needed to be sent to them for service, 1) My computer is not even 3 months old and 2) I never bought it from Microsoft, Acer I contacted second and they won't even respond because they don't even know what to do. Microsoft just tells me the same thing over and over again, uninstall the touchpad and I respond that the touchpad does not show in device manager and they respond telling me to send my PC to them?

I have installed everything on the page for Acer and nothing took away that one unknown device.
In device manager, dbl click the unknown device to open properties
press the details tab
scroll through the Property dropdown box until you see Hardware Ids (usually in the top three propeties)
Right click the fullest value (ACPIVEN_HPQ&DEV_0004)
then post it here and someone can help find a solution - or- paste that into a browser search
be careful though - many so-called driver sites have junk or worse

I looked at your machine on Acer and thought - "hey why not try the Win8 driver?"
TouchPad | ELANTECH | Touchpad | Driver | 13.6.1.1 | 7.1 MB | 2014/11/04

You might also try uninstalling it first, remove software if that option is offered

I have done everything as stated above this thread. When I updated this to Windows 10 it now doesn't recognize the touchpad. I have tried to install the touchpad driver's 100 times and nothing happens because the system doesn't even give the "unknown" to try to associate with it.

In 2014 there was a BIOS update to correct this problem, is your bios up to date?
