defender won't turn on - problem with update?

Okay - tried to turn on defender got error code 0x800b0100
Googled that and the Windows update troubleshooter says I have a missing or corrupt file but the only help page I could find was for 8.1, not Windows 10 (which I'm running) so I'm not sure where to go from here. So I'm asking you guys for help.

Not sure what info you would need to help me out but please help me out.

Run the dism and sfc commands as instructed on the Windows 8.1/7 help pages then report back

okay ran the dism commands
dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
and got the following message:

Error: 0x800f081f

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.

The DISM log file can be found at C:WINDOWSLogsDISMdism.log

I tried looking up the error code and was redirected back to the same DISM page as before.

OK - what about the SFC command?

OK - what about the SFC command?
C:WINDOWSsystem32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For
example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.

C:WINDOWSsystem32>

Run it at least 3 times before ruling that option out as a fix.

If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannowcommand 3 times restarting the PC after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.

If not, then run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthcommand to repair any component store corruption, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannowcommand again.

Can you clarify - the refresh option mentions dumping apps and the like while keeping personal data - where do things like documents, pictures, movies, games and the like fit in? Will they be wiped or kept?

I couldn't tell you because I haven't used it yet. The person to ask who might know would be the writer of the tutorial, Brink. I sent him a request because I'm also curious about the answer.

My defender is off because AVG has switched it off.

Hello Jim,

Personal files would be anything in your "C:Users(user-name)" profile folder.
