Chess Titans is an excellent chess game developed by Oberon Games and included with Windows Vista and several editions of Windows 7.
When Windows 8 and 10 were introduced, Chess Titans was not included but it was available via “Download Windows 7 games for Windows 10” from Winaero.com.
Thus, as an enthusiastic Chess player, I have been enjoying Chess Titans since 2006. That is until the update “Anniversary” version 1607 of Windows 10 after which my Chess Titans has just disappeared! Now it seems that the Winaero download no longer works and, even after much searching, I have been unable to find a way of restoring Chess Titans. There are, of course, numerous on-line offers on line purporting to do this but they all seem to lack credibility.
Please can anybody advise me how to restore Chess Titans to version 1607 of Windows 10?
You realise that site is not an official Microsoft site.
This download retrieves a file named "Chess Giants Installer.exe" which is NOT Chess Titans. An attempt to install it results in a request for a "donation" before it will proceed. I did not proceed!
Wise move... clearly as I said, I'd not tried it, sorry. Looks like people have posted torrents (not functional now) of what was that (maybe) so if you find it, it's likely to come from a potentially dubious source.
I have the exact same problem. However, I was able to re-install the "Windows-7-Games-For-Windows-8-and-10-Multilanguage-x86-x64" software and . . . . it did not fix the problem!! The games folder was installed and I can see an entry for each of the games. Also the Games are in the program filesgames directory. When I click the link nothing happens, the program will not run. When I go to program filesMicrosoft GamesChessChess.exe and try to run it directly it won't run. When I try to run it "as administrator" the "Program Compatibility Assistant" pops up. I have tried every compatibility setting available and it will not run. I looked in the registry and the value name for the chess program is "@C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesChessChess.exe,-170". I haven't been able to find out what the -170 means but I don't think it is the problem. I believe that the update has a hidden code somewhere that targets these programs specifically and prevents them from running. I have been looking for runtime logs to see if there is any record of what happens when I attempt to run them but have not found anything yet.
Any ideas appreciated.
I suspect that the despicable author of Chess Giants somehow sabotaged Chess Titans in order to maximise his income from the compulsory "donations"
This updated version works with 1607.
