can I update to 64bit

I have two laptops currently running win 10 after updating them both. My question is can I update one of my laptops that were running Win7 Pro sp1 32bit and update it to win 10 64bit? I have win 10 64bit on my main laptop and still have the ISO. Is this possible?

Thanks

I believe it will need to be for the same operating system, or it won't activate.

Is your system a 64 bit ?

If your hardware supports 64-bit, you will need to perform a clean install in order to upgrade. Don't forget to backup your files.

No it's 32bit, I've already updated to win 10 32bit. I was wondering if I could update to 64bit, it's a shame if I can't as I have 8gig ram in there.

So i can do a clean install now after the upgrade, which has been activated successfully. Will it ask for a serial number or will it give me the option of skipping that part. I will be using a USB for the upgrade if it can be done.

The same Windows key is valid for either a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows. But you can't upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit. You must perform a clean install when going from one to the other.

From a license standpoint, you can go back and forth from one to the other as often as you desire. From a programming standpoint, one is incompatable with the other when it comes to upgrades. So you must do a clean install when going from one to the other.

Thanks for the info. I don't mind doing a clean install as I want a fresh start. All my important data is on a separate partition so there's no worries on that side of things.

No offense but how can you update from 32 bit to 64bit if the system is 32bit ? Its like saying can I install 8 spark plugs in my 4 cylinder engine, get what I mean ?

On my other laptop my OS was Win 7 pro sp1 32bit. I updated it to win 10 32bit. I wanted to know if I could now put Win 10 64bit on by doing a clean install but with the key from Win 7 32bit.

Seems I can

The license key isn't the issues its whether your system hardware is 64bit, can you do the following on the laptop you want to install the 64bit, this way we will know whether you can or can't

  • Click Start.
  • Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. If "x64 Edition" is listed under System, your processor is capable of running a 64-bit version of Windows
