System Image

I wanted to create a system image to backup my PC as this is the second time I've had to format my PC. But when it asks me where to save it, I'm unable to choose the option, "On a hard disk".

It has to be backed up on a physical hard drive other that the one the OS is on. A second internal, if possible, or external are good choices.

It can also be done on a Network location but that is a much slower process.

Is there a way to do it through a CD?

Using a third party program such as Paragon Hard Disk Manager. But you still need a hard drive to put it in. I do my images from the OS. I only have to use the DVD when restoring (since the OS partition will be overwritten).

No it doesn't as long as the HDD is partitioned. See Step 5 System Image - Create in Windows 10

Correct. The second partition on the same hard drive is OK if you need to restore it due to a software failure/corruption. I prefer a second hard drive installed at a minimum - an external hard drive even better - because if you need to restore because of a hard drive failure, the second partition is likely to be unreadable as well. And with the external hard drive you can still restore if something takes out the whole computer, like a power surge.

DVDs just take too long, haven't found them to be all that reliable, and when you have 100 gb of photos and videos that is a heck of a lot of DVDs in series to make!

You can back up to DVD's. However, it will require multiple DVD's and takes hours to back up, not practical and not counting if you scratch any of those DVD's then the whole backup becomes useless.

Even you can partition the hard disk and do the backup as mentioned above but if your HD is broken then there's no way to restore. So bottom line is to backup to another internal HD or to an external HD.

A re-image will not find a Windows Image Backup on the same hard drive as the OS. As far as I know, it will not even offer to use another partition on the same drive for the image backup.
Never mind I will have to do some testing.. Looks like some things have changed.

I already did it when I wrote the tutorial.

I Always use my DVD's cd's don't hold as much information. Also use a 3rd party program which I own, its not free. I use Acronis
backup software, have for years. I've already re-installed Windows 10, 5 times since 1st installing it. Plus I only make the complete backup when Windows has been running the most stable. I see no sense in putting it on any hard drive and wasting that space. Just my 2cents worth.
