Ok Lets see if I can explain this. I have two computers in my home, both running Windows 10 Pro. They are hardwired I do not use Wifi. Everything goes thur router. Right now all the drives and folders I want to share work fine between both computers. Also share my printer which is setup as a lan connection, also hooked into my router. Works fine.
I am the only person using these 2 computers in my home.
I am using my MS account to login both computers, same password. No local account setup.
Now for the small problems. When I use RDC to login to my 2nd computer from my main computer I log in fine, but it displays the name "Other user" as I am logging in ??? Does not show my name. This is my 1st question, is their a way to fix this log in name problem??
Next question .. I have home group enabled for both computers also. I am just wondering IF I really need Home group enabled at all??? If I turn off home group for both computers, will that effect my network folders and drives that I share between both computers and printer????
Thanks guys.
Hi
With respect to your second question, I use Workgroups rather than Home Groups to share data across my PC's (a mix of win 10 Pro and Win 7 Ult), a shared printer and a number of NAS devices. Everything works great.

Well thanks for all the help so far....which has been NONE!!!
3rd question for my network problems. When ever I login to the 2nd computer with RDC, then later go to my 2nd computer and go to access it, it now wants me to put in my password again, which its not suppose to ask me. If I don't login to this 2nd computer thur RDC the 2nd computer does not ask me for my password. Only happens after I have logged in remotely from main computer?
I sure could use some help from topgundcp on this stuff.
Can't help much with the RDC issue. I installed RDC Wrapper on the server computer that I log into remotely, so my RDC session gets its own separate console. I have two users on the server created - one which logs in automatically and the only function is to start my media player, then I have my actual user account which is what I log into when I RDC into it. With RDC Wrapper the user account that is logged in locally stays logged in and is completely unaffected by the RDC session.
As for homegroups, I don't use one. I don't like Windows deciding what gets shared and what doesn't. If you disable homegroups, then for the most part, you have to manually set the sharing setting for each folder you want to share. I typically have a "public" set of folders that I share (Documents, Downloads, Video, Music, etc.) which I keep separate from my personal folders of the same type.
Think that is the way I setup my folders already, manually set each one. I share folders like my D-drive, Documents, and download folders. and my printer is shared between both computers. printer is hooked into back of router. That's why I was wondering why I needed homegroup. windows already sees it as workgroup now, even with homegroup enabled. I got RDC working only from main computer to 2nd computer, will not run from 2nd computer to main computer....strange. only problem RDC gives me is when it logs me in to 2nd computer, I'm logged in as "Other User" for some strange reason.
Ok I found what was giving me the problem when using RDC from my 2nd computer not being able to log in to my main computer. I had a setting in my main computer that did not allow remote desktop logins. duh.... So I have RDC working from either computer now. Still don't know why RDC logs me in as "Other User" thou??? Small problem I know, but still bugs me why it does not log me in under my name????? I am the only user on either computer.
As far as can I remove my homegroup from both computers without affecting my shared folders and shared printer, still not sure if I turned off homegroup how it would affect my network settings. I am using Workgroup, and use Private and not public also. Funny thing is since setting up my private network feature, even thou Homegroup is still enabled, if I click on homegroup from file explorer Homegroup reports it can't find ANY homegroups on my computer. So even thou it reports I am a member and joined, homegroup seems to have turned itself off??? lol
I am making this as solved, even thou it never was, thought I would get some help, never got much help at all!!! So who ever deletes these threads, delete this one. Seems nobody wants to help or give me suggestions. Thanks...
