Windows 10 keeps installing the ASUS Smart Gesture touchpad driver on my laptop. The driver is garbage and it runs three memory resident processes, which seems rather excessive for a touchpad driver. The default Windows touchpad driver works perfectly well, so I want to use that instead of the ASUS driver. However, if I uninstall the ASUS driver Windows Update quickly reinstalls it.
I disabled automatic driver installation when I installed Windows 10, as you can see here:
Despite that Windows update keeps installing the ASUS Smart Gesture driver.
Any idea how I can make it stop?
Try just diabling it in device manager. It will remain installed, but your system will use the windows default.
The Touchpad can't be disabled in the Device Manager, presumably to stop people disabling it and then being unable to use their computer:
Even if it could be disabled, wouldn't that just disable the touchpad entirely rather than switching the driver to the Microsoft driver?
Try using the right click option, and search for a driver on the PC.
After I made my last post I noticed the "stop specific driver update in Windows 10" thread in the Similar Threads below. In that there's a link to this Microsoft tool:
Using that you can block a specific update. The only worrying thing is it says it's temporary and that if the driver is updated Windows Update will automatically install the new version.
I'm really not liking anything about Windows 10. The user interface, the lack of customisation, the lack of control, the spying, the advertising, the replacing everything with Metro apps. Sadly, there are no Windows 7 drivers for this laptop, but I might give Windows 7 a try anyway.
Hello MJ9797,
You do have an option an option to disable hardware specific updates.
Please follow these steps:
a. Type “System Settings” in the search next to start or Press Windows key+ Pause break key.
b. Select View advanced system settings.
c. Click on Hardware Tab in system properties.
d. Click on Device installation settings.
e. Select No, Let Me choose what to do.
f. Select Never install driver software from Windows Update.
G. Click on Save changes.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Edwin.
