Samsung shows up biggest ever SSD for the enterprise

Do you want a seriously big and seriously fast solid state drive (SSD) for your enterprise servers? Samsung has exactly what you need. It's new PM1633a SSDholds an amazing 15.36 terabytes (TB) of data.

The Samsung PM1633a SSD may look ordinary, but inside its Clark Kent exterior lives a Superman of 15.36TB storage / Samsung.

Space is all well and good, but the PM1633a SSD also provides the speed your Big Data projects need with its 12Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface. Better still, if you need to maximize your physical space as well as your storage space, the PM1633a comes in a 2.5-inch form factor. That means you can can fit twice as many of the drives in a standard 19-inch, 2U rack, compared to an equivalent 3.5-inch storage drive.

How did Samsung manage to fit over 15TB on a single SSD? The Korean company did it by combining 512 of Samsung's 256Gb V-NAND memory chips. The 256Gb dies, in turn, are stacked in 16 layers to form a single 512GB package, with a total of 32 NAND flash packages in the 15.36TB drive.

Samsung stacks 3rd generation, 256-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND technology 48 layers cell-arrays. This means that he PM1633a line-up provides significant performance and reliability upgrades from its predecessor, the PM1633...

Sounds like we're another step closer to larger and cheaper SSDs for the home user.

Sounds like a(n archivist's) dream come true!

Or nightmare if they have to back it up!!

Or nightmare, if it breaks and there's no backup...

Hi there

One of those on a NAS box would be great -- however only Lottery Winners need even to be THINKING about buying one of those for the moment - although prices will come down.

Seems the writing is on the wall eventually for older "Rust distributers" -- also SSD more environmentally friendly to make too -- note that the so called "Rare Earths" used in SSD manufacture are not actually so "Rare" and use SSD's use less harmful products in manufacture - including a lot less Coal (for Iron Ore - in the spinners).

Love to see the day when my NAS box (already small form factor - Microserver size) will be smaller than the Cable Box !!!! Less power and heat too I'd imagine.

Shows though the way to the future.

Cheers

Sounding very promising but I am sure the $$$$ value will kill it off for the ordinary user.

It will be years before the price would be low enough for the home user. It does show the technology is improving and the prices of SSDs should go even lower than they are today.
