Dell Inspiron 1545
Maybe a new variation of some similar older issues.
- Trackpad makes Pointer to move, allows dragging lock screen down & up - That is the only thing(s) that can be done.
The rest..
- Password, Power/ Shutdown icon (bottom right) & any other stuff that is VISIBLEare NOT CLICKABLE/ Have no effect on clicking
- No response to (internal) keyboard buttons
- Can enter BIOS and BIOS related options using F2 and F12, but keyboard is zero effect in Win 10. (Is there a Safe Mode thing for Win 10 that can be pushed before Win 10 boots?)
This Issue JUST STARTED 1-2 days back on my aunts laptop (which was working okayish on Win 10 for now so must be some recent PUSH updates):
PS: I've decided to put her back on Win 8.1 cause I hate having to support Win 10 shenanigans every damn week with some friend or relative. But still need to try and recover the OS, get their stuff migrated off it.
Any thoughts and workarounds?
Hi, you can get to Safe Mode if you can boot from a Win 10 bootable medium (e.g. Win 10 installation DVD).
There are plenty of guides on the internet, and one in the Tutorial section on Safe Mode if you need guidance- just search.
Hopefully you already have a backup of most data.
Clearly you could also recover some data from the disk by connecting it to another PC, although permissions issues could well arise.
You can also use restore points to help recover to a working state, assuming System restore was enabled (it's not by default). Again, system restore is accessible via such a boot medium if necessary.
Failing those options, it is possible to restore a backup copy of the registry using such a boot medium.
PS: I do have a bunch of bootables, but I just did not bring them with me when I visited and so tried all I could with the usual F keys.
Safe mode and any F8, F2, F12 all was unavailable. There was no way to touch anything after the F2 to get into BIOS.
So, based on a lot of threads online I went and disabled everything I could from the BIOS. It still had the same issue.
My relatives tried several times and it would just be stuck. Next day they just turned it on and LEFT IT in frustration.
Guess what happened.. it finally went in.. and also showed something updating.. (Not sure in what order as I was not there).
Based on what they told me, I think this was some Windows Update process in the background that was LOCKING the OS out, but not showing the "updating process" or LOCKING THE SCREEN with proper indication. And instead it was showing the logon screen - but that was LOCKED OUT.
While everytime it gave the INCORRECT INDICATION people thought the OS was ready for logon and use, while actually it was trying to INITIATE, GO THROUGH & COMPLETE some OS/ System/ Update stuff (God knows..) .. And it could never complete as after several minutes they would POWER CYCLE the hardware.
But, I remember it was kept on and un touched for a while before.. and it did not complete.
My guess is when I disabled and minimized hardware / devices/ components at some point it was able to go through and complete what it wanted to do.
This is the "mis communication" and "mis representation" of Windows 10.
Next day I re enabled the devices from BIOS that were disabled.
Asked them to back up data etc. and this time they listened to my advise on staying off Win 10 since they were LOCKED out of their machine by MS.. and when they wanted to do some crucial work.
