Asus webcam is dark, unusable

Hi everyone,

as far as I know, this has started since upgrading to Windows 10. the webcam is very dark but still functioning, as in, if I hold a light in front of it, it will appear on the screen.

to me it looks like low exposure time. I suppose when everything is working fine, the camera adjusts the exposure time relative to the brightness of the image, which is obviously not the case right now.

My laptop is an Asus UX501JW.
The camera drivers I see under Device Manager are(well, is):
USB2.0 HD UVC WebCam

Things I've tried so far:

uninstalling the driver and re-installing it. every time I restart my PC the driver is back.
googling my problem to no avail
trying to install drivers off the internet like RealTek and stuff. I've found another post about someone installing Fujitsu drivers and having that fix his problem, it didn't help me.
Talking to Asus support, which redirected me to Microsoft because the camera driver is theirs. Microsoft couldn't help me out because I need to pay for some premium bulls**t service.

And that's about it. I have no further ideas.

Anyone else facing this issue? any ideas how to solve it?

Thanks.

Aha! I solved it! (sorry for the 3 day bump!)

For future reference, in case anyone stumbles across this post:

What I did:
1. Go into Skype
2. Tools -> Settings (or something like that)
3. go to video settings and choose your webcam, you'll have a little preview window to see how you look (who's that handsome guy? )
4. choose webcam settings under the window, or something along those lines.
5. Exposure: set to Auto

That was my intuition and it turned out to be true!
What's even weirder is that once you turn it on in Skype, it turns it on everywhere, if you open up the Camera application on your laptop it will auto-exposure there too.

Case closed, marked as solved.

I have a similar problem with an old notebook. No setting could fix the picture. After I downloaded and tried many compatible drivers, finally one of them worked and I could see a useful picture in daylight. Using the camera at night with artificial light, makes the picture dark again. Weird. At least it works in daylight.

Worked for me. Thanks a lot!
Same model, UX501JW.

I'm glad to see this has helped someone else.

(since this has already been bumped. I see no issue in bumping it once more)

For anyone else having a similar problem, right click on the web camera in Device Manager (under Imaging Devices) and select Properties. Then go at the Details tab and select Hardware IDs from the list. Write down the Vendor ID (VEN or VID) and the Product ID (DEV or PID) and then Google them for Windows drivers. ANY driver from Vista to Windows 10 should work, of course the newer preferred. Then test as many drivers as you can find with these IDs until one of them works.

Warning: Some drivers could give you a BSOD. If you cannot start normally, start in Safe Mode and remove the device from Device Manager. Then search for it again and try the next driver.
