Sansung S5 users -- Android update -- BACKUP PHONE !!!!!!

Hi there

Samsung S5 users on some networks (Vodafone and associated carriers) will find that after the 5.0 Android updates things like links in email / internet will fail with messages like "Vodafone update unexpectedly stopped" and the application will end.

Vodafone is of course 2,000,000% useless on their call centres.

What you need to do is whether or not you backed up first -- INSTALL KIES / KIES3 for Samsung S5 on your PC --it works on W10.

BACKUP your phone

Do a complete system reset

Restore.

Can't you just do a reset from settings on the phone without having to use Kies?

Jimbo is talking about using Kies to do a BACKUP of the phone PRIOR to doing a system reset.

I don't think this is specific to Samsung. I have an HTC phone that after the Lollipop update works much worse than before. I certainly need to do the system reset on it, just didn't have the time yet. Naturally one needs to backup beforehand, other wise all contacts, etc. will be lost.

All in all, I really wish I could go back to kitkat, the phone was working like a charm.

Hi there

Having Backed up your phone a system reset will bring it back to working like a charm again. You might find you have to re-install some apps from Google Play again - KIES didn't backup EVERYTHING 100% but about 97% of stuff. It might also be an idea to backup apps on Google play store too -- I had WINAMP PRO for android (not available in the store any more but it was on my backup on Google). Google will backup any purchased apps too but like all these things I'd rely on more than one backup system. - Same with computers !!!.

Actually I just reset my HTC phone. I backed up not only with the HTC Sync software, but also with a couple of third-party Android managers. None of them backed up any kind of settings (system or apps), accounts, passwords, etc. Even calendar (and I'm using the stock Google calendar) was not backed up, I only managed to restore some events from Google sync. One program backed up custom ringtones, others did not. Restoring contacts with names and addresses using non-ASCII characters is a pain in the neck. The list goes on. Years ago, when I had a simple cell phone , it came with PC software that gave me complete control over everything that I could possibly set on the phone myself (sounds, colors, contacts, texts). Now it's a complete disaster. Those PC programs are practically junk. So everything has to be done manually and thus takes a lot of time.

I use google backup that shipped with Lollipop. Works well and is simple. Turn it on and backs up everything now.
Might only work on nexus devices though, someone with another brand of phone would have to try.
