Windows 10 Upgrade

I downloaded the iso using the media creation tool and when I try to install Windows 10 I am asked for a key. I tried using my windows 8.1 key but that didn't work. what do I need to use?

You cannot do an install from a booted ISO image first (whether dvd or usb based)

You can use that iso media to run the upgrade but you MUST run it while in the operating system you are upgrading.

You cannot do a clean/fresh install first.

Essentially the first installation MUST be an upgrade on top of an existing verifiable installation.

I am running the iso from inside my windows 8.1 install. I mount the ISo and click on setup, it then asks me for a product key. I have no idea what to do now.

Don't know what to do? READ.

You have to run the upgrade first. Not an iso in 8.1. Upgrade, activate, then and only then clean install.

You need to read this first: Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 blog

You do not enter a product key. Choose SKIP. Take the time to read this: Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 blog

Mounting the ISO from a booted Win 8.1 system and running setup.exe does an upgrade install. I know, I just finished doing this and it worked perfectly, just as it did for all the Insider Preview builds.

Edit:If you are being asked for a key I suspect the wrong ISO was downloaded from Microsoft and doesn't match the version of 7 or 8.1 you have installed.

No, I'm good. Legitimate Windows 7 Professional with SP1 x64. I used the media creator tool. I'm activated and running Windows 10 Pro x64. I did not enter a key.

Edit: This works on the same PC it was upgraded to first.

When you clean install after a successful upgrade (and activation), you will not need a key, at least that's what MS has stated. Clean Install after upgrade - Page 2 - Windows 10 blog

My post was directed to loquacious, not you, sorry.

No problem. It's been a long day. I was a VIP and Power user on Win 7 blog. Shawn hooked me up as a VIP member even though it doesn't show up and neither do all of my reps. So I have been trying to help. It's 8PM local time and I need to chill before alarm goes off at 5AM.

Have a good evening.

All sorted, I had downloaded the wrong version.
