Check to ensure that you have the recommended version of Java installed on your Windows computer and identify any versions that are out of date and should be uninstalled.
Very important for security if you use the browser add-on. Do not forget to tick "Suppress sponsor offers when installing or updating Java" in the Advanced tab before updating-it's at the very bottom:

Thanks for this info Cliff, never knew we had this choice, I was always just changing the setting during the update.
You're welcome Mike. They're getting sneakier all the time....
"Suppress sponsor offers when installing or updating Java" - I didn't know such an option exists. Thanks for the info, guys!
Did the install fail removing older versions for you as well? I had update 60 installed, the 65 installer also found it and I made it remove the old version. However, afterwards all files in the program folder were still there. I had to remove them manually...
I always update through Java control panel, over the previous, and it cleans out the older version itself.

New Updates.
Gary that's Java RE not JAVA, 2 different animals.I just checked.Summary:
1. Java is a software platform, while JRE is a software package.
2. JRE contains the necessary software for runningJava applications.
3. Java is the same, regardless of the operating system, while the JRE differs.
It should, but that didn't work: It did the clean up, but the files have not been removed. I had to do that by hand.
Do you have Ccleaner? try that if you do. Also check here:
