SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition

My Secunia is showing that SQL needs an update. From what I have read this edition is no longer supported. I have no idea what program I have installed that is using SQL but am assuming that i have a program that uses it. I have installed SQL Server Compact 4.0 SP1 x64 ENU. I am trying to make sure that this is the software I need to use now and if I can just uninstall the 2005 edition with out messing something up?
Thanks for any help.

If you have Windows Live Essentials Photogallery, that's the one that needs the SQL 2005 Compact Edition. Windows Live Mail does not need SQL, as far as I know, but other applets in the WL suite might.

You're right, it is no longer supported, but I discovered helping another member that the 4.0 version does not work for Photogallery. To be completely honest - that thread was not resolved - not sure why, but it is still open. I'm waiting to see if the Thread Starter will install the 2005 version, but they decided to use Picassa as their photo manager.

So all I know is that the 4.0 version did not resolve the "You need SQL Compact edition" pop-up when Photogallery was started from Start.

When I open jpg's they open with an app that just says photo's. The icon looks like 2 mountain peaks next to each other. I don't know if that's live essentials photo gallery or not? The photos and program from start open with no error messages. Under about this app it says Microsoft Photos.
Thanks

Thanks - yep, that's the Universal Windows Platform(UWP) Photos App that is opening the jpg file

Try this:
Right clcik the Windows log on the taskbar
Select Programs and Features

Look for Windows Live Essentials or Photogallery (I think it's all under the Windows Live Essentials umbrella though)
If that is in the list, then you probably have it installed.

Did you ever use Windows Live Mail or Photogallery before upgrading?

Understand that Photogallery is the only software that I know requires SQL2005CE, there might be others on your system.

I'll try to locate the other thread where I offered a download of SQL2005CE.

There is an entry for Essentials 2012. I have been looking at Microsoft pages for downloading and installing SQL 2014 Express. I'm thinking of uninstalling the 2005 and seeing if something else stops working then going from there.

Looking through file explorer I found Photo Gallery that was installed with Essentials 2012 on the same date as my SQL 2005. Clicking on the exe to run the program brought up a window to agree to the service agreement. So I think I have never used the program and am going to go ahead and uninstall the SQL 2005. Hopefully everything will be ok after that.
Thanks for your help.

You're welcome

Sure, if you don't use Photogallery, then you don't need SQL2005CE ... unless there's another product that needs it (doubtful, but you have to do the due diligence ... it sounds as though you're comfortable removing it).

If something you need or want breaks, SQL2005CE isn't easy to find, even if you provided it as a link for another member - I'm still looking for that thread
