I was working on my PC last week and received the notification that updates where available to install, along with a countdown of an automatic restart. So I shut down the computer.
1-Restarting the computer resulted in a blue loading screen with the message: Attempting "Automatic Repair".
2-The Windows 10 blue screen loaded with the following message: "“Your PC did not start correctly. Press “Restart to restart your PC, which can sometimes fix the problem. You can also press “Advanced options to try other options to repair your PC”".
3-Restarting the PC resulted in steps 1-2 repeating.
I have seen other PC users complain about this automatic repair loop problem but no solutions. Anyone have one yet?
FYI: If I boot with a USB drive, I can access the files on the Win10 disk with the File Explorer.
Hi, first thing to try is boot up using your installation medium, and navigate from Repair your PC to Troubleshooting and thence to Startup Repair.
If that fails, if you have restore points, you can try System Restore, again, booting from your installation medium.
If you don't have any system restore points, try the second part of this:

This is for Win 7 (sorry about that!) - you will see the first part is about Startup Repair, then if that fails, about replacing the registry with a backup copy. (I couldn't find the equivalent in the current tutorial section, but maybe the title is very different).
Note: when I have a repeating repair loop (where it simply restarts by itself, so different to your case) I do a cold boot, making sure to power down wait and discharge anything before restarting.
I had a "diagnosing your pc" loop, tried many things including bootrec.exe commands, but only after manually applying the instructions from [Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery - Windows 7 Help blog] above, (even though I am on Windows 10,) was I able to get back to normal. Sad that this information was not easily findable when searching for solutions, I spent several hours trying to fix this. Even "Resetting Your PC" didn't work. The more you know.
Hi, glad that worked for you. Once people made good use of ERUNT to back up the registry and restore it conveniently, and could be run from a command prompt.
More modern is Tweaking.com's tool, which offers registry backup, and there is a portable version which you can put on a suitable boot disk.
Note that using disk imaging (VERY strongly recommended) will also give you a way out, albeit you'll lose anything change from when you created the image. Macrium Reflect (free) or Aomei Backupper (free) + boot disk + external storage medium.
I followed this link, but step 13 said (paraphrasing) "if DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE or SYSTEM are 0 bytes, seek alternative method" and I had to stop because they were all 0. Sorry to hear you are getting the Blue Screen Loop. I ended up reformatting and reinstalling Win10. It has worked flawlessly since then, on the same PC. Before I had an OS that had been cobbled together by updates. Download the ISO version, make a DVD, and R+R that sucker from scratch. That worked for me
