New laptop locked

I bought a new hp laptop, pulled it out of the box, started it up, and it was stuck on "just a moment" for over an hour. It suddenly restarted by itseld, and went to a login screen. The user is defaultuser0, password protected. Please help!

Ummm take it back to where you bought it?

Yeah, ok.

Yes, that is what I would advise as well. You newly bought it and it obviously has some kind of defect.

It almost sounds like it is a returned product and there was some halfway attempt to reset it to factory made previously.

Maybe, but that doesn't matter for mommalminer. He was promissed something working, but he got something broken. End of story.

You can try booting it from a Windows 10 install media created with Media Creation Tool from another computer and select the repair option instead of "Install Now". That might get you into a menu that allows you to try a factory refresh from the recovery partition (if there is one).

In the HP manual/documentation, does it list a password to use on the first login? Can you Google "default username and password for HP xxxxxxx laptop"?

A new computer should not start up with a default user. A new computer should start up to the Windows OOBE (Out of Box Experience) which has the user set up their first account.

True. As an ordinary end user you will most likely not be able to get it to do another start, which then looks as if it was the first one, running the OOBE stuff and so. And you don't have to. I would return it.
