I am trying to help my sons friend. His laptop had a major crash
I had to repair. failed.
full refresh/replace... laptop died at 90% (he forgot to plug it in!!)
and now we cant get through the whole install. It has a critical error before it finishes.
he got a win 10 cd to re-install from that instead of the HD... and it does the same thing
It seems odd though that it does not prompt "boot to cd" even though we have it set in the bios and the CD is spinning away while it tries to boot.
Im kind of stuck now.

Hello, I'll try to separate your issues if I can.
1. Data and backup. You've not mentioned this, but this is really your first priority.
Is there already an adequate backup of any personal data on the PC?
If not, given that you cannot get it to boot at all (the remaining possibility being to get it to boot from a bootable USB flash drive to access data on your disk), you should consider removing the disk from the laptop, putting it in a case and connecting it to another PC to rescue data - assuming the drive works.
Doing that will enable you to check it.
2. Your Win 10 'CD' - I think it will be a Win 10 DVD, rather than CD. I hope so...
This should be build 10586 (which came out last November).
Basic question- does this work on another PC?
3. Your PC - HP 15-g031cy Notebook PC
Noted this is listed as sold with Win 10 (HP Drivers are listed to win 8.1 --which is ok)

4. Booting from DVD:
This varies from laptop to laptop. For example on mine, I have to hit a key (not F8!) as it boots up rather than change the boot priority in the BIOS.
Sorry, I don't understand
he got a win 10 cd to re-install from that instead of the HD
ok.
1.Data... nothing on it important. He already attempted a fresh install from the win 10 recovery and chose to wipe the pc. This is when it died from the battery... so no worries about recovering
2. yes win 10 - but he bought one from amazon (i didnt know this or I would have to him not to) yes dvd lol. So its new out of the box.. it should work
3. yeah it had win 10. we have tried everything to get the boot menu.. HP uses ESC but the menu there isnt the normal one. Thats how we got to the bios. The boot menu there doesnt have the normal choices (I HATE HP)
4. being that its HP, they have the "recovery" partition... which its trying to use. this is where its failing, so we need it to actually boot from the CD, which i am sure its not since its not giving the normal win 10 welcome/install screen.
Have I mentioned I hate HP?
lol
