After waiting forever (and a day) for my Samsung laptop to upgrade from win 8.1 (64bit) to win 10 finally downloaded ISO file and installed on flash drive. Booting from flash drive will enable me to proceed with a clean install but to upgrade it says I must start setup file when in Win 8.1. Tried this and nothing happens. Start setup as admin and program seems to begin to load and then nothing. Downloaded Media installation file and same result. While waiting before, I checked to see if all was compatible and got message that it was.
Any suggestion appreciated, thank you.
How long did you wait after running setup.exe? It might take a minute or two for anything to come up. Also, disable/remove any third party antivirus programs before running setup.exe.
Thanks for you response. Only third party program used that might interfere would be Malware Anti Exploit. Will disable that and try again. Shall post results.
30 min and nothing ... next?
Do you still have the downloaded ISO file saved on your computer? Right click on it and select Mount. Then run setup.exe from the drive letter that appears.
While upgrading your Windows, Setup will try to replace drivers for your devices. If any device is found not having Windows 10 drivers on Windows Update or other known source to Setup, it will hang. Uninstall any antivirus and firewall, remove all peripherals (printers, scanners etc). Then go at Device Manager and disable any non-important device such as audio, SATA/SCSI controller without devices attached, TV tuner etc. Then press Win+R to load Run and execute msconfig. Go to Services tab and check the box to hide all Microsoft services. See the remaining third-party services and uncheck the box to disable anything non-important such as updaters. Then click on the Startup tab and click to open Task Manager. See all startup applications and disable anything non-important such as Java updater, Skype, QTtask and quick launchers. Now you should be able to run Setup without any issue.
Thank you,
Have tried all suggestions, unfortunately without success.
Update icon had disappeared when I first tried to update from USB. Was able to reinstall today after other attempts failed and checking the PC resulted in no problems with PC apps or data being found.
Might mention that only apps not disabled were RoboForm tray icon and Win Patrol.
Am wondering if rebooting into safe mode and then trying the upgrade could be a consideration?
We enjoy a challenge, right?
Thanks again
If you run setup from safe mode you will be asked to restart in normal mode and run setup again. Download new ISO and try again.
No need to upgrade first with the 10586 TH2 build. Just boot from the flash drive and do a clean install. The installer will get Windows 8.1 the key from BIOS. If you are asked for a key, click Skip.
Ensure you are on an Administrator type account. Restart your computer, and make sure all antivirus programs are removed. Try downloading the newest version of the media creation tool, and install the ISO it provides to your USB (the tool will do it all for you). This is to ensure it is working correctly.
Then try the setup from USB again (from an admin type account).
