7870 with same black screen issue

I have a new i5 system with a fresh install of Windows 10x64 and a good old AMD 7870 graphics card. I have been using AMD Crimson drivers 16.3.2 for Win10x64. No overclocking. The system has worked flawlessly the last six weeks. A couple of days ago I had my first crash, when the PC locked up loading a game.

I rebooted the PC and the BIOS came up fine. It started loading Windows, then came a black screen just before login, no cursor, no light, like there was no signal to the monitor.

Same problem upon successive reboots.

But the PC would reboot into safe mode fine. After some Googling, I began suspecting the AMD video drivers.

So I used Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in safe mode to remove all the AMD video drivers. Windows 10 then booted to the desktop and works great, but only with basic Microsoft video drivers.

Whenever I try installing the AMD video card drivers, I get the same black screen lockup (no signal?), just at the point the new driver is taking over. Normally the screen would come back on and driver installation would complete. But instead I can only reboot without AMD video drivers.

I have tried installing Crimson 16.3.2, 16.4.1, 15.12 and Catalyst 15.7.1 drivers for Win10x64, all with the black screen at the later stage of the attempted install.

Does anyone have an idea of what I could try next?

I have the same problem with my laptop and the AMD Radeon HD 8970M.
After the update to the windows version 10586.218 i could only boot into the safe mode. Every other way gave me bsod and automatic repairs, which did nothing.
After i reinstalled win 10 i can at least start windows but every time i try to install an AMD driver the system hangs or bsods.
I will try to deinstall the recent windows update and then disabling the auto-update for the time being.
Unfortunately i have not found anyone, except you, with the same problem.

I am too facing the same issue with my HD7870. Latest cumulative update has created this problem i guess. But removing the update is also of no use. It keeps on installing the driver making the system to hang whenever it tries to install and rendering it completely useless. No other go other than keeping some older build for time being. Been trying all the solutions mentioned in various forms but none works. Please update incase of any findings. This issue is driving me nuts.

@Keyan16
You can disable Windows 10 grabbing updates for your hardware, so it won't automatically download the AMD video drivers and black screen in the install. So at least I can use Windows 10 with the basic Microsoft video driver. I mention this just in case you didn't know.

@Fritz
Yes. I had blocked windows updates. I even tried to install Catalyst driver in version 14s. Still no luck. So this is definitely issue with MS update.

Just to update. The graphics card began to show obvious signs of failure with green corruption, even at the BIOS stage. I have since replaced it.

For anyone having similar problems, I'd suggest trying the card in another machine, if you can, to determine if the video card hardware is the issue.
