I got a refurbished Dell Precision M6600 laptop a few months ago. I immediately (and successfully) updated it to Windows 10 from Windows 7 when I got it. (It did not come with backup media.)
However, once it had Windows 10, I had many problems updating it. With most update attempts, it would fail and revert changes.
My concern is the big November update, which would perpetually fail, with the following error code:
0xC1900101-0x30018
However, after one particular attempt, it never showed back up in Windows Update. I have the Media Creation Tool for build 586 on a flash drive, but every time I attempt it, it gives a simple 'update failed' popup saying to restart to retry the update at 40%.
I disabled my antivirus and firewall, and I switched off the Wifi for my most recent attempt. I'm fairly certain all my drivers are up to date.
I've probably attempted this eight times at this point, so it's not 'just a fluke', I assume.
Side note, my 6-year-old Dell Inspiron 1545 installed the new build fine.
I don't want to do a clean install (e.g., not keep apps) because I have far too many programs and games installed for it to be time-effective.
It installed today's regular updates fine; it just won't do the big update from build 240 to 586 (which, again, does not show up in the list).
I've seen other people post about issues with this update, but most of them seem to be upgrading from Win7 or 8, and they usually say they had a BSOD and had stopped at a lower percentage.
I would prefer to not take it apart, if possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Download Image health in my sig below...
Run Option 1, run option 6 and run option 10
then try to reinstall the upgrade via the 10586 MCT Media
Unfortunately, it didn't work. Same error, same percentage. Any other suggestions?
There is a setup error log in the Windows 10 installation directory on your C: drive - setuperr.log and a much longer log file setupact.log. These may give some clue at the end of file about what is wrong.
I like to call myself a computer enthusiast, but I'm definitely out of my league here. I attached the files; can anyone make sense of them?
C:$Windows.~BTSourcesNewSystem.dat: The system cannot find the file specified.
Delete $Windows.~BT folder and the $Windows.~WS folder (if present)
download the Setup media ISO from
double-click the ISO to mount it... Run setup.exe within current Host OS to upgrade..
Same error, same percentage.
Still build 240. Interestingly, the new setuperr.log is completely blank. I've attached the new setupact.log in case there's anything useful in there.
Any other suggestions?
Bump
Edit: Around this time my wireless card was giving me trouble, and eventually stopped working altogether. I replaced the wireless card with a new one, and the update went without a hitch.
