Hello,
I have bought a PC with Windows 10 pre-installed and I did not have a problem with activation. But one day, after an update I got a message to activate Windows but when I tried I got this error 0x8007007B. Is there any fix to this?
Thanks
That tends to happen with build 10240, when the generic VL key gets installed, however your PC is a Win 10 OEM right? which should have it's own key. Run the following in command prompt.
slmgr -dlv
..and paste the screenshot.
You may want to use ShowKey to check the firmware for a key as well.
There you go
Definitely run Showkey. Click on the product keys to blank them out. Then post the results here.
Showkey - Windows 10 blog
You can also try running from a Command Prompt (Admin):
slmgr /upk
slmgr /ipk VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T
slmgr /ato
However, if you have a Windows 10 Home product key in bios/UEFI - the reason your Windows 10 is not activated is because you got upgraded to Windows 10 Pro somehow.
Basically, you bought a PC with Windows 10 illegally activated on it. If the change in my post #4 does not activate it (using a stored or granted [by Microsoft] digital entitlement), you need to purchase a Windows license.
Well, you have the KMS client VL key (Appendix A: KMS Client Setup Keys) installed...which can only be activated via a KMS server.
From whom was the PC purchased? - if it was illegally activated via a KMS exploit (not only does VL not qualify for DE but an illegally activated one to boot) - hopefully the recent updates has rectified that.
This is all irrelevant if you have an OEM key in the firmware, however.
EDIT: LOL a bit late in my reply - new info noted.
EDIT: Truncated info regarding the illegal activation (though true, prefer it not to be public knowledge.)
In post #5 he doesn't. I'm leaning toward illegal activation by whomever sold him the PC.
Yup... I edited my 'after-the-fact' post.
