In the latest version of Windows 10, Windows Media Player can play MKV files natively which will be welcomed improvement for those of you who do not like to download codecs.

I assume that DVDs support hasn't been restored?

Unfortunately not without WMC.
I run the new version of 'Media Payer Classic-Home Cinema' for DVD's. Very powerful and versatile yet light on resources. Gives VLC a run for the money.

Home ? MPC-HC

I have K-Lite Codec pack (includes MPC-HC) and VLC installed for watching video .

Sometimes MPC-HC refuses to respond to dragging the progress bar.
At those times I start VLC.

Hi

I installed K-Lite Codec Pack in Windows 10 too.
Didn't cause any problems.

I use WinAmp for my media center, but I still like to play video in Windows Media Player.

I haven't installed VLC in W10 TP yet.

MPC-HC seems to function "normally".

I use WinAmp to play my music on W7.

I haven't installed WinAmp in W10 TP yet either.

WMP12 screwed up ~1000 of my mp3 files when I tested it during the W7 betas.
I've always avoided activating since then.

Hi there
VLC works just fine in W10. Plays just about every Audio and Video Codec known to man and includes DVDCSS or whatever the decryption library is for playing commercial dvd's. What VLC also can do is STREAM the video to other devices too !!!

When reading don't download any of the offers -- afraid a lot of websites seem to be adding these "downloads" these days --THEY AREN'T PART OF THE ARTICLE !!!! AND NOT REQUIRED TO MAKE VLC STREAM AS DESCRIBED.

Cheers

You can also transcode video as well.

The current version's transcode function is buggy though (some combinations don't seem to work correctly).
On my PC, v2.0.8 was the last version that transcoded correctly.

I wonder, why do you even install codec pack, when you use MPC and VLC?

MPC-HC comes with the codec pack.

I use VLC when MPC-HC is being cantankerous.

I have both as there seem to be a stupid number of worthless codecs used for video (I have video clips that won't play in one or the other of those players, so I need both).

Maybe it's possible to tweak one of those to play everything, but configuring video players and codecs is ridiculously difficult (I'd rather configure servers than video codecs).

The last time I tried configuring a video codec (madVR) I followed a tutorial and afterwards playback was worse than before I started.
