Error 0x80070426

I'm so frustrated with things that have gone wrong since update to the anniversary release.

The latest is when I do a restart, I get a Error 0x80070426 error. The Security Center Service show that it is running.
I think it started when I did an msconfig and tried other booting options to look for another problem. I did not make any changes in msconfig.

This does not happen when I do a shutdown, and reboot.

What can I do?

Just a quick thought - I've not researched your error message (which I recommend you do)-
does turning off Fast Startup make any difference?
Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 blog

It is on. I've been researching for hours and can't find any reason for the error when doing a restart. I think this started when I tried using msconfig and restarted several times. I never made any changes with msconfig.

My suggestion was to turn it off... (quite a common one). Try it... nothing to lose. Meanwhile do research your error message... time for bed.. sorry!

Check and make sure the Software Protection service is started and set to automatic.

Fast Start on or off makes no difference.

Software Protection is set to Automatic Delayed. The status on the list of services does not show it running. The status on the properties showed it running, then not running. If that sounds strange, look at the status of the Security Center on both windows, it's showing both:

I remembered I had a System Restore Checkpoint from right after the Anniversary update. I did a lot of nail biting while it ran for what seemed like forever, but it looks like it fixed the problem. Now I have 5 days of tweaks and small fixes to redo. You can bet I'll make a few checkpoints along the way.

Excellent.. sometimes Windows features work to our advantage. Do you also use disk imaging? Sometimes System Restore proves unreliable, and disk imaging also provides a more complete solution and several advantages.

Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

Images also act as a full backup- you can extract files too.

You can even use images to help you move more easily and quickly to a new PC.

Imaging can even help you sleep at night knowing you have a second chance.

Many here recommend Macrium Reflect (free) as a good robust solution and more reliable than some others. It’s
- more feature rich
- more flexible
- more reliable
than Windows Backup and Restore system images.

It's well supported with videos, help and a responsive forum.
