Easy fix

Windows 10 Files Explorer (Search App) began crashing during most file searches after the installation
of Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3149135) and other updates on 6/14/2016

By crashing, I mean after selecting a folder and typing in a word/string to search, "working on it ..." pops up
then in a few seconds, the active File Explorer Window totally disappears; the Desktop Icons disappear then slowly
re-populate; the Taskbar items were also cleared but return about 15-20 seconds later.

I cannot find a common factor for those that will/won't crash.

I ran SFC /SCANNOW and there were not validation errors.

In addition, I rebuilt the Search Indexand cleared the Search history- the issue continued.

I did not have this issue the day before the update as Windows 10 has been very stable for the last 4-6 months.

Any thoughts? TIA

Dennis

Any third party security software loaded on the machine? You can try the DISM fix. Rebuilding the search is not going to resolve this. Also roll back before that set of updates were applied. Last year it was a couple of KB's that were causing the crash behavior. This is not a wide spread issue right now, so will need to have you go step by step, working backwards. That means uninstall any third party Security software, roll back before the updates and then see if the problem goes away.

Using Malwarebytes and Windows Defender for about 8 years. Did not have issue until 6/14/2016 updates.

In my mind, MS changed some code that was not completed vetted. This happens all the time. It seems the only way this type of issue gets fixed is publically calling it out then waiting until MS fixes it. Their coding staff spends too much time in distracted-fun mode at "work" and defaults to forcing their customers to beta test their patches.

Thanks for your time and thoughts!

Yes Microsoft has been updating code to make sure that machines are ready when Redstone rolls out.

First rule of thumb when a problem occurs, is to uninstall any third party security software. Especially with 10, since the Anti-Malware providers cannot keep up with all of the changes that Microsoft is rolling ou to fix things.

If the problem stays away when you install the most recent version of MBAM, then you know that it should hopefully stay that way.

Also go in and in System, do not let Microsoft Updates make any Driver changes.

I am having similar issues with File Explorer crashing recently. A week ago or something like that, my file explorer was working perfectly fine. Then all of a sudden, my file explorer repetitively crashes. Sometimes my file explorer works after I open it a bunch of times (it finally loads in) and yeah. Also, each time it crashes, it does that thing where my desktop icons disappears then slowly re-appears along with the explorer itself crashing. File explorer also crashes when I try to upload something on the internet (as an example, a photo on a social media website such as Facebook), however it just crashes my web browser and nothing else happens (the web browser that I was using by the way is Google Chrome). But yeah, hopefully Microsoft fixes this soon. It's severely limiting the use of my computer.

From control panel opened File Explorer Options and on the pop-up pressed "Clear" next to Clear File Explorer history. From there the file explorer started working normal

Anniversary Update gave me same issueo
