I can easily copy/move files from old computer with XP pro via a shared folder or a flash drive to new with Win 10 .Cant work out how to copy straight to a desk top folder Its no hassle to copy/move from the shared folder to desk top but like to keep the desk top tidy. Must be a way to do this surely ???

Create the folder on the Desktop then double click on it to open it. Do exactly what you did to copy to the Desktop but copy/paste (don't move in case there are problems, delete after the paste is successful) into the new Folder.
Can you describe where you are having a problem?
With XP I used to select all and copy as a block . But thats just to another folder in same computer . These docs I am trying to move across to new lap top are copies letters, various certificates, some old photos. If I copy a whole folder from XP say to 'shared folder' in new computer I just get an empty folder. Maybe I am trying to do something that wont work ? Can just copy singularly to desk top and skid them all into a new folder but thats messy. I thought there maybe a quicker way ?Create the folder on the Desktop then double click on it to open it. Not fussed on this WIN 10 took me ages to find the how to delete a program thingy . Is very well hidden. Why complicate stuff? Because they can perhaps.

Don't copy yo the shared folder on the new computer. Create a folder on the Desktop then select all you want, right click and drag them to the folder on the desktop of the new computer and let go of the mouse button. Then you can select copy or move. Select copy. Once all are copied and you are sure they are where you want them you can delete them from the old computer if you want.
Likewise, you can select all you want, right click and select copy. Right click on the new folder on the desktop of the new computer then select paste.
You could also use Dropbox, or Microsoft's OneDrive for this kind of share.
They are quite useful for copying some files between two computers.
OneDrive is even built into Windows 10.

If you have trouble connecting the two computers together via your local network, using a flash drive might be a good alternative.
