Upgrade: Windows update vs ISO

Hi,

I would like to know if there's any difference between upgrading via Windows Update and via ISO (pro and cons).
I'm not trying to make a clean installation at the moment.

I think both process "Window Update" and "ISO" will serve the same thing. Though if you consider ISO method, then you will need to create a Bootable USB Drive/DVD, so can use them for doing a clean installation in future too.

How you're going to upgrade with the ISO without creating a Bootable Disk of Windows Setup? I think , you will need to create the Bootable USB Disk/DVD from the iso to upgrade. Which you can save for future clean installation (if you want).

create the ISO and then double click the ISO, to mount it.. Run setup.exe to perform the upgrade..

If you copy the contents of the ISO to a USB stick, you will have bootable setup media on that USB Stick, thus you can do a clean installation. Or you can run setup.exe from the USB and upgrade

If you right-click the ISO you can Burn to DVD and have bootable DVD media..

You MUST upgrade first, to register the windows 10 activation.. After that you can perform a clean installation, but do not input any product key when asked, just Skip the key screens.. Windows 10 will re-activate without a key..

And @PaoloLib,

I urge you to either backup all your important stuff or create a disk image of your current Win7 installation prior to upgrade. It'll protect you against possible data loss.

That's true on the key thing just keep hitting the skip and set up will ask about three times to put it in but just skip it and it will activate when you get to the desktop.

I am thinking that you will need to do an upgrade to get the free windows 10. If when installing from an ISO if you do the clean install first it will not use your win 7 key to activate the install. Please let us know how it goes for you.

A detail: Windows 8 has a built-in utility to mount an ISO. 7 does not.

With 7, the options are: install a utility (freeware available) to mount the ISO, extract the ISO to a folder (7Zip works), or create a bootable medium. (To run an upgrade, don't boot from the device.)
