We are trying to update from windows 7 sp1 to windows 10 (pro versions). Windows 10 installs fine but wont activate as it tells me my key is invalid. Windows 7 was activated just fine. I called Microsoft and they said they are working on the issue but it may be 48 hours. I believe my windows 7 key was a technet/msdn key. Will that matter?
Did you do an in place upgrade of Windows 7 - as in from Windows Update within Windows 7, or "Upgrade this PC now" option of the Media Creation Tool, or run setup.exe for Windows 10 from within Windows 7?
We used the tool and did the upgrade.
Then it shouldn't matter. I would give Microsoft a couple days to try to fix their activation servers.
Hope so, as theres no button to click to activate...will it just activate on its own?
It should just activate on its own. I would actually reboot the computer at least once a day rather than shutdown or sleep. Also, from an elevated command prompt ("Run as Administrator" command prompt) you can type slmgr /ato to force an online activation attempt.
Will this still work since theres no activate button?
Yes
That didn't quite answer the question he asked. Using the tool, did you choose "Upgrade this PC Now"? Or did you create an ISO? If you created an ISO, did you mount the ISO and run setup.exe? Or did you boot from the ISO (or boot from USB)?
Sorry. We used the tool and chose upgrade this pc
