Whats up guys?
So recently i just moved to Japan and i cant access all my websites or games etc without it redirecting me to Japanese sites. a lot of what i use to do is blocked or restricted. How can i either disable my location completely for my whole computer or chrome, or mock my location from the states in either my whole PC or just chrome?
You need to use a VPN service, with a proxy server based in the US.
Just search for one that suits you- there are some free ones, giveaways, commercial ones.
is there a way i can just do it in chrome?
I don't use Chrome, sorry, so don't know if there's some sort of plugin.
You can find lists of proxy servers that are supposed to work, and just put the server URL into your browser, then the URL you want to go to into the box in the page displayed, but that's
a. unreliable (finding a working proxy)
b. time consuming
c. means you can't browse normally.
Using a VPN will redirect most traffic. Many VPN servers won't accept e.g. torrents.
Some countries also try to block either specific VPN services, or even (Great Firewall of China e.g.) VPN protocol.
Websites determine your location from your IP address which was assigned to you by your ISP. Your ISP of course has only Japanese IP addresses to give you. A VPN service acts as an intermediary through which Internet traffic flows and it is the their IP address that the website sees. To accomplish your purposes you must use a VPN service that is outside of Japan. Nothing in your computer can influence this. An IP address is fundamental to all Internet communication and cannot be blocked. It would be like ordering an item online and not providing an address where it can be sent to.
Edit: Using a VPN is not without it's problems. It is not that difficult for a website to see that you are using such a service. All they have to do is match the IP address to a list of known VPN services. They might consider that if you are hiding your location you have something to hide and not to be trusted. And be aware that there are VPN services that exist for the sole purpose of stealing your data.
is there a way to setup chrome to mock my location for websites? can i manually change the IP address of my computer?
No.
Read my post #5 which explains why. That is as clear as I can make it.
You could use the hola chrome plugin until you find a better solution Unlimited Free VPN - Hola - Chrome Web Store
I have a VPN setup for chrome, but it's slow, so I wanted a more permanent solution. Guess VPN will have to work for now. Thanks guys!
