MoreLive tiles first appeared in October 2012, when Microsoft officially introduced the new Windows 8, and since then they have received several rounds of improvements which has made it very clear that Redmond has no intention to dump them and go back to the traditional Windows approach.
Things have changed since then, however, and even though Microsoft brought back the Start menu, it found a way to actually mix the original design with the new live tiles, thus making sure that this new modern concept lives on despite the return of traditional Windows features.
And there’s information that live tiles will continue to be a key feature in future Windows versions, not only on the desktop, but also on smartphones and tablets.
So long as they can be switched totally off...
Do you mean turn the live tiles off like a dead-looking icon?
What's wrong with dead-looking icons! For me, I don't need or want live tiles.
I imagine some will find usefulness for live titles,
Like all feeds there will be quirks with them eventually,
I'm not a fan of them but the choices to have them or not needs to be there.
I use some of them, The weather network for one. I can see what its like outside with just a quick glance and no having to launch the app. The clock tile comes in handy too.
It's the information age full of life. If there needs to be a link why not make it more useful? Live tiles only make more sense. Those that don't want or have tiles will only miss out on things like this: Tile on Start for Designer Media Windows Help blog
Or this: The Real Quality Boot Time of 8 Verses 7
That's anyone's choice, of course.
Limited or metered internet access might be the only people that might not use live titles
Otherwise they are not much different than feeds or gadgets something that continually updates,
Low powered systems might also have an issue on startup initially loading them :/
Something easily forgotten or taken for granted not everyone is on high speed internet some people might be on dialup
Live tiles are fine as long as I can turn them off since I find them far more annoying than useful.
