And here I thought my Win 10 install was wrecked...

Up until earlier today, the Start Menu worked fine...but now something bizarre is happening.

I could type in a command, such as G: or Steam and hit enter, and that would activate the command. How, hitting enter closes the start menu. I can still click on the icon and it works, but just typing in the command and hitting enter does nothing. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Quick change here, as more information has been discovered. I'll paste my discussion from another thread I'm asking on.

-----------

Until recently, I've been able to use the start menu just fine. I'll bring up the start menu, type in something like E:, then hit enter and the command runs. Now, hitting enter causes the start menu to close. I can click on the item in the start menu and it'll work, and as I just figured out now, several things do still work, but if I try to access my computer files through the start menu, then hitting enter closes the start menu.

Typing E: and hitting enter will close the start menu, and if I open up the start menu again right away, it lags for a bit and doesn't do anything, with the text box greyed out. Now, I can type E: and click on the icon and everything works fine...but I'd like to be able to hit enter again to traverse my computer. Thanks to anyone who understands what is going on.

So yeah, it's only when I try to navigate my computer using the start menu and the enter key does it close the start menu.

Oh thank jeebus! I thought I was the only person who had this problem. I've been searching all night trying to find a solution to the problem.

I guess you can tell that I am experiencing the exact same symptoms with the search as you are. I wish I had a definitive answer for you on how to solve this.

That said, the Enter key did work twice tonight for me when I fiddled with settings (e.g. the regional settings), but immediately went back to crashing right after.

I get this in my event log when SearchUI crashes (and, it does indeed crash when you hit Enter on specific items such as folders... hence the pause):
Code:
Faulting application name: SearchUI.exe, version: 10.0.10240.16515, time stamp: 0x55fa5578 Faulting module name: CortanaApi.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x55fa5354 Exception code: 0xc0000409 Fault offset: 0x000000000013e739 Faulting process ID: 0x25a8 Faulting application start time: 0x01d11c51f2a62d24 Faulting application path: C:WindowsSystemAppsMicrosoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewySearchUI.exe Faulting module path: C:WindowsSystemAppsMicrosoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewyCortanaApi.dll Report ID: 95204738-8ae8-4b58-b7d8-a2d2abf52bee Faulting package full name: Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_1.4.8.176_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy Faulting package-relative application ID: CortanaUI
Now, certain items, like the Windows Store, Calculator, and Settings (these are the only ones I've tried) are working with the "Enter" key.

I figure something got broken via an update. I hope they fix this fast, I rely on this way too much.

Update: I got my girlfriend to try and search using Enter on her machine, and it won't work there either. This is smelling more and more like a windows update broke something.

I am experiencing the same - and it drives me mad! I normally just type drive and folder in search bar and click enter to navigate fast. Now I have to first search and then click with the mouse.

I've confirmed this on other PCs as well. This issue arose recently - I guess it came with an update - maybe the 5.nov?

Issue seems to have been fixed in the 1511 update that was available today. It works as expected again.

And here I thought my Win 10 install was wrecked...
