Hello,
I have gotten into quite the pickle. I had to restore my disk with Acronis. However, I had picked the wrong disk and the MBR got misplaced. Now the SFC /scannow does not work and after any windows update, my computer becomes non-bootable.
I noticed that my operating system (Windows 10 Pro) is on a separate partition marked D: and my C: drive is on a small partition marked active; which I'm assuming contains the MBR. These two partitions are on the same disk.
I am thinking that when windows update happens, it cannot find the Operation System and all goes haywire. I end up having to reinstall from Acronis rescue disk, as repair does not work.
Is there a way to combine the two partitions on the disk?
I should also mention that all my file folders are on a separate disk titled :I <- not sure if this matters, as all my Windows install is on the disk I mentioned above. I did find something troubling. From my Acronis rescue image it appears that a MBR has also been assigned to that disk. However, there is no operating system there.
Thank you in advance for your time and help.
Normally there is a small partition system reserved about 100 meg which is active and contains the boot files so if needed it can load bitlocker tool to read an encrypted c drive. Then you have c drive which has all the windows files on it you need both partitions setup correct for it to boot this is assuming you are using a MBR disk and not a uefi drive which will have other partitions as well. The small boot partition shouldnt normally have a drive letter you cant simply join the drives as the boot will look for a second partition to load windows
Drive letters as seen in Windows repair or other repair facility are assigned for it's use and have no relationship to those seen by Windows.
I am lost as to what to do at this point. The system will not run sfc scan now. It will just say it cannot complete this operation. I have done chkdsk C: /f /r /x and it shows all kinds of corruptions and then says Failed to lo transfer logged messages to event log. "Status 50"
I also get this error after windows update and failed reboot. System failed to extract the file H:windowssyswow64migrationthmigplugin.dll
I have been at this for weeks! I really cannot afford a clean install of Windows. Does it look helpless guys? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
If anyone is up to solving this with me and earning "Mystery of the Ages" Master computer guru award! Please help!
Just run the update tool and that writes a new o/s with no data loss which may solve it Windows 10
You say I have been at this for weeks! I really cannot afford a clean install of Windows there is no cost for win10 you can do a clean install for free
What I have been doing is reinstalling my last good config from Acronis, doing my daily work, and then trying a few fixes I find online. Unfortunately, once I shut down my computer, I wake up to Blue Screen of Death. Repeat! It's a horrible existence.
I use my computer for work and have tons of programs installed. To have to reinstall everything will be a huge undertaking, thus trying to find the solution to avoid that.
I should have mentioned. Windows 10 was reinstalled by Windows Remote Assistant tech. This is the image from right after that install that I'm using. So I don't think that will solve my problem, unless, I do a complete wipe.
Thank you so much for taking your time to reply. It means a lot to me.
I ran the update tool as suggested. Figured it couldn't hurt. I noticed it reordered my Disk assignment. C: is now assigned Disk 2 and my blank F: disk I use for film renders is in the Disk 0 position. Does this matter? Picture attached.
Just for my own knowledge... Why did it do this?
I don't know if the crash at reboot is solved yet. I will report back.
Thanks again for your time! I know it's valuable and I really do appreciate it!
Thank you Samuria
I'm at a loss as to why the Windows reinstall worked with the link you provided and did not with when Windows live support did the reinstall. Your version gave me a newer version of Windows with a cleaner layout too. The SFC /scannow works and reports no violations. My computer started with out a blue screen today!
I did have to reinstall my Kaspersky and video card drivers and both gave an error that said "memory could not be located" With a error code at restart after the uninstall. However, the reinstall went fine and everything is working at this point.
Thank you again. Still not sure why my disks got reordered? I know you're busy, but if you know why, would love to know. Just curious.
Thanks again!
