After the Anniversary Update Windows Defender inserts itself into the context menu and also adds its icon to the Notification Area.
This is despite the fact that Windows Defender is turned off on my machine. Also, Settings -> Personalize ->Taskbar -> Selects winch icons appear on the taskbarsetting says "Windows Defender notification icon = OFF".
I can get rid of the context menu entry using the reg hack from here. But how do I suppress the Notification Area icon? And why is it even displaying that icon, despite the above settings?
That is correct. It is the new behavior for it, because there are still some bugs that have to be worked out. Everyone that installs the Anniversary, are once again the Guinea Pigs, just like when 10 was released.
Well, that Windows Defender icon disappeared from the notification area after a few reboots. So apparently this was some kind of "just updated" glitch.
Hello Andrey,
If it shows up again, then an option in the tutorial below may help.
Windows Defender Notification Area Icon - Hide or Show in Windows 10
I would have uninstalled any third party antivirus prior to updating to Redstone, just to be on the safe side.
I love the defender icon saves me having to click on it all the time
I have Norton & after AU finished installing/setting up Win Defender popped up saying would I like to use it to do occasional scans (paraphrasing here), it recognised I had a 3rd party AV software installed so I assume it's a new feature.
A Recent thread.................... also on my Windows 10 the ICON has been appears on System Tray and it's appears today whitout any sense because it's never appears and because i have the latest version of Avira installed.
How i can definelly disable this icon ? I have try to look on startup on task managers and there's no voices about Windows Defender... i have also tryed to look on services... no voices.
Ok i can hide the icon.... but i ever used to obtain all icon visible.... how i can do to leave again this icon ?
I think you can now have Defender + some other antivirus at the same time. Not 100% sure though.
Yes, the Anniversary update included the new functionality. Windows Defender remains onboard so you can use it for scans [in much the same way that you might have Malwarebytes free installed for manual scanning].
If you want to see confirmation then read What's new in Windows Defender.
This new facility is also referred to as Limited periodic scanning and is discussed in
