Build 10532 -- Expiry now 16 July 2016

Hi there

Looks like the preview (insider) program will be ongoing for the foreseeable future

Build 10532 (the latest) is set to expire on 16 JULY 2016 so nice long testing periods.

Cheers

Which, as I just learned yesterday, should not be confused with activation expiration. :-)

How so? Curious.

From an elevated command prompt type slmgr /xpr

Mine says "The machine is permanently activated." Yet slmgr /dlv and winver both show an expiration date of July 2016 for build 10532. So, I make the system date past July 2016 and attempt to boot into 10532 and I immediately get the system restore startup that says operating system files are expired and gives me the option to reinstall files from an installation media or boot into another operating system.

The activation is permanent, but the expiration date is July 2016. slmgr /dlv and winver in build 10240 make no mention of any type of expiration at all.

Ah, I see. As with all betas (Technical Preview), there will be an expiration date for the current build. I don't remember when others were set to expire, but I do know that all builds with a number less than 10100 have expired. That's the Microsoft way with Windows. Each Insider Build will have an expiration date.

As to the machine being permanently activated, that's also as it should be. I have a dual boot machine with Windows 10 RTM/GA on one partition and Insider Build 10532 on the other. I'm assuming that when I upgraded my Windows 8.1 Pro partition to Windows 10 RTM/GA, the machine was permanently activated at that time. Since both partitions are on the same machine, it makes sense that both partitions show as permanently acitvated.

Hi there.

build 10240 was the build released to UPGRADERS from W7 / W8 / W8.1 (and also NEW i.e paying customers) so there's no sense in having an expiration date at all on it.

If you are running the insider program your build will probably have already been updated to build 10532.

Also if you had never had a license installed but were an insider prior to that you got a 10240 with no expiry. If you left the insider program at that point it stays without expiry (at the moment).

If you stayed in the insider program you got upgraded to builds with (currently) a 15 July 2016 expiry but you can still restore back to 10240 and still get unlimited expiry. Just look at slmgr /xpr and slmgr /dlv.
