Touching a popular topic here but it's got me thinking. I'm running a Noctua NH-D15, which some of us should know is a behemoth. It's basically the size of my head. I can't get over the reality that something so big and heavy is hanging off of my motherboard. Every time I walk through my room at night and bump my PC, I have this terrifying fear that it's going to break off and drop onto my graphics card and kill my system. Don't get me wrong, it performs so beautifully even at low RPMs that it I feel pretty smug that I got something so cool (ba-dum-tsh) for the price. But now I'm wondering if I should step up to something like the NZXT Kraken X61.
Anyone here have issues with large air coolers stressing motherboards? I know I'm being paranoid, so let's get that out of the way. :P
If it was installed by the instructions, it is fine. I had the NH-D14 for a lot of years and it never had a problem of damaging anything. I know a lot of people have other opinions, but in my opinion the NH-D14 was the best air cooler you could get. Knowing Noctua, I'm sure the D15 is better. I switched from the D14 to a Corsair H100 for a while but switched back. The D14 was better.
A lot of people use the AIO Coolers because they make the case look cleaner and there is no clearance issues with ram (though I never had that problem). I would imagine the AIO's are more efficient now than when I tried the H100. But, the choice is yours. But, damaging the board should not be a consideration.
I use a Corsair H75, no problems with it at all. It is quiet and was simple to install.
Always loved Noctua for there case fans,so quiet,i have thought of trying there coolers.
Might ease some of your thoughts if ever looked here

Truthfully i do good with this on my Intel Core i7 5820K, On CPU Cool Master Hyper 212 Evo Dual 120mm & 2 Noctua PWM 120mm Case Fans, 1 Gelid PWM 120mm.
He already has that cooler. It isn't a question of if he should buy one.

as previously stated, I used the D14 (which is essentially the same thing as the D15) on at least 4 or 5 different motherboards and the cooler caused no problems. Noctua's mounting system is quite good, and pretty simple too. Having too much cooling is not all together a bad thing. Certainly better than not enough. From experience, I don't see where the weight is an issue.
